Rockers sign and more: 4 innocent gestures that are considered rude in other countries (5 photos)
Where you can't cross your fingers and make other offensive gestures that seem harmless to us.
Traditions among peoples have developed over centuries. It's amazing how different they can be from country to country. For example, it is customary to give an even number of flowers only at funerals, but in other countries this rule does not exist.
But the differences are not just about customs: some of the most popular gestures that we often use in everyday life may be considered offensive and very rude in other parts of the world.
OK sign
We curl our thumb and index finger together to show that everything is fine and wonderful, but in Brazil this gesture is unacceptable. Brazilians perceive such a sign as “You are a complete zero” or “You are nothing.” By the way, in Turkey you also need to be more careful: the Turks see this as an insult, because in their country it means “You’re an idiot.”
Fingers crossed
We cross our fingers for luck, but in Vietnam this gesture symbolizes female genitalia. If you wish good luck to a Vietnamese person this way, you may be misunderstood and end up in a very awkward situation.
Sharp touch
During emotional dialogue, we often use touch. Interestingly, in Armenia a sharp touch with the palm means “I curse you.” If this sign is used in relation to the interlocutor by a mother, grandmother or other close relative, it has a slightly different meaning: “I can’t stand you.”
Rockers' favorite gesture
If you're going to a rock party in Spain, try not to wear devil horns. For Spaniards, this gesture is completely inappropriate, even if you are at a rock concert. The fact is that it means cuckold.
