11 actors who completely naked for a role and are not shy about it (12 photos)
Passionate and explicit scenes with nudity in films and TV series are a common occurrence, but it’s a completely different matter when it’s male actors who have to show off their intimate parts. It's so rare that every time it happens, it immediately makes headlines. However, the actors themselves do not consider this to be anything special, and in general they treat such a sensitive topic quite calmly. Here's what they say about it.
1. Ben Affleck - Gone Girl
Ben Affleck went completely naked in Gone Girl - albeit for a split second. Speaking about the scene that all the media wrote about after the film's release, Ben admitted that he didn't even know that the audience would be able to see anything.
“We had a shower scene in the film. And David [Fincher] reassured me, because trust is so important for directors and actors: “Listen, if we shoot downward, we won't get to the point where you can see anything.” So thank you, David. And I'd like to thank you for always keeping it cool on set. Because when there's a chance that America will see your stuff, it's in your best interest to keep it cold. A real gift,” Ben joked at the Hollywood Film Awards.
2. Chris Pine - "King Out of Sign"
In the 2018 film Outlaw King, Chris Pine went completely naked in the scene where his character emerges from a lake. Although the scene only takes a second, Chris says it was important for him to do it because it was necessary for his character's story. Ahead of the film's release, Chris added that he was surprised by the amount of headlines surrounding the scene and was also "embarrassed that it even needs to be talked about."
“There is definitely a double standard because no one would talk about it if it was a woman. I say: “Why? Because this is expected of women, but not of men? Why isn't this expected of men? Why haven't men done this before? Does this show their vulnerability? Does it demonstrate a vestigial, puritanical shame about the human body and human intimacy? Yet we are allowed violence, self-flagellation and harming each other - because we have been taught that this is normal within the culture? I don't know. It definitely seems kind of weird,” Chris told E! News.
3. Jesse Williams - "Take Me With You"
In the play "Take Me Out", which became the actor's Broadway debut, Williams is completely naked in front of the public. Although the actor said that he has learned not to pay attention to the audience's reaction and prefers not to know whether his family has come to the performance before the performance, he does not consider this to be anything out of the ordinary.
“People are making a big deal out of this. It's just a body. As soon as you see it, you realize it's nothing special,” Jesse said on Watch What Happens Live.
4. Ewan McGregor - several films
Ewan McGregor has never been shy about posing nude when taking on new roles. In fact, he's stripped down in several films over the years, including Trainspotting and Velvet Goldmine. The actor says that this has never been a problem for him, and he does it simply because the role requires it.
“Nudity is something that happens to me at the end of the day, and if I'm lucky, in the middle of the day. And I don't understand why this is a problem. I don't take my clothes off in films because I want to show off my body. I take my clothes off for movies because I'm an actor,” Ewan told E!.
5. Tom Cruise - "All the Right Moves"
Although Tom Cruise got naked in All the Right Moves, he did so entirely of his own accord. His co-star, Lea Thompson, said that when she complained to him about her own nudity scenes, Cruise helped talk the directors out of one of them. In the remaining scene, Tom offered to undress with her for company.
"For the second one, he said, 'Well, if she has to be naked, I'll be naked too.' This is pretty cool! I was always grateful that he stood up to the producers,” Leah told Indiewire.
6. Michael Fassbender - “Shame”
There's no shortage of nudity in the 2012 film Shame. Michael says that before accepting the role, he thought about the double standards regarding male and female nudity in film, and ended up dedicating the role to his mother.
“It just baffles me: women can walk around naked all the time, but a guy conveniently ends up wearing pants. I remember that my mother always complained about this: “This is such nonsense, only women are always naked.” So I did this for you, mom!” — Michael said in an interview with Vulture.
7. Jude Law - "Dom Hemingway"
Jude Law seemed to have no problem stripping down for his role in Dom Hemingway, and he performed the scene on the first day of filming. He says he immediately came on set naked to get into character.
“We went through the whole movie and I decided the best way to start was to make sure the crew knew who and what Dom was. So I thought the best thing to do would be to start with this crazy first scene, which is incredibly explicit and I'm naked in it. So I walked onto the set with no clothes on and started this particular monologue,” Jude told E!.
8. Kevin Bacon - "Wildness"
Kevin Bacon has no problem getting naked on camera - just talking about it. Although Kevin didn't mind being naked in Wild, he was annoyed that he was constantly asked about it in interviews.
“My problem with nudity is this: I starred in the film Wildness, which was completely nudity. And I didn't have a problem with it because it's a shower scene and it was that kind of movie. What I had a problem with was that when I was promoting the film - and even to this day - that's all I talked about. So it ended up becoming, I don't know, just a boring topic of conversation for me,” Kevin told Business Insider.
9. Jason Segel - "In Flight"
In the very first minutes of the 2008 film “In Flight,” a completely naked Jason Segel appears before the audience, whose character was trying to surprise his girlfriend. Instead, she breaks up with him, which sets the plot of the entire film. Jason wrote the scene himself and says he wouldn't have done it if there wasn't a creative purpose behind it.
“There was a creative idea behind it; this was done not only for shocking effect. I wanted this to be the most humiliating breakup of all time. When I wrote this, I was saying to myself - the problem with romantic comedies is that you know what's going to happen. The guy in the poster will end up with the girl in the poster. But if I start this movie with something you didn't expect to see, you're kind of forced to change your attitude towards it. You don't know what's going to happen in this movie anymore,” Jason told Vulture.
10. Richard Gere - "American Gigolo"
Back in 1980, Richard Gere became one of the first male actors to appear completely naked in the film American Gigolo. According to Richard, he didn't actually plan to appear naked in the film, it just happened naturally.
“As far as I remember, [nudity] was not in the script. It was a natural process of making the film. I certainly felt vulnerable, but I don't think it's the same for men as it is for women," he told Entertainment Weekly.
11. James McAvoy - The Last King of Scotland
James McAvoy has no problem getting naked in the movies (or on stage). When asked about the corresponding scene in The Last King of Scotland, James said he just loved being naked.
“Yes, I like to take my clothes off. I like being naked, I like being naked on stage - more than I like being naked in a movie. Getting naked in a movie isn't all that fun, but being naked on stage is really liberating. There's nowhere to hide on stage, you're completely vulnerable. When you're completely vulnerable, it can't get any worse, can it?” - said James.
