How to choose an engagement ring

It is believed that the idea itself belongs to the ancient Egyptians, who worshiped the Moon and the Sun. They sought protection by wearing their magical symbols on their arms. In Catholic Europe, the tradition of wedding rings appeared around the 6th century. Moreover, the obligation to wear was prescribed exclusively to women. Why? Today no one remembers.

Rules for wearing wedding rings

There are no academic “rules” for wearing wedding rings. Over the past centuries, they have literally been on all the fingers of both hands, without exception, and in some African tribes - on the noses and ears. Today it is customary to adhere to traditions characteristic of a given area, society or religion. Although, this principle is not mandatory.

Orthodox

Orthodox people use the ring fingers of their right hands to wear wedding rings. According to the canons of faith, it is with our right hand that we do all “godly” deeds. In particular, we sign ourselves and others with the sign of the cross and shake hands.

Few people know that “left” is spelled “sinister” in Latin. This word is literally translated from English as “sinister, evil,” that is, negative. Accordingly, “right” is “dexterity”. “Dexterous, skillful,” which means positive.

Catholics

The split of Christianity into Catholicism and Orthodoxy, as is known, occurred in 1054. Hence all sorts of differences introduced in different centuries by Constantinople and the Vatican. If Orthodox people wear wedding rings on their right hands, then true Catholics wear wedding rings on their left hands. Moreover, the fingers are the same in both cases – the ring fingers.

They substantiate their point of view by the presence in this place of an artery directly coming from the heart. Particles of the noble metal that penetrate the blood supposedly prolong our lives and preserve love.

Muslims

In Islam, wedding rings are not part of wedding rituals. In some countries, couples wear rings on the index fingers of their right hands as a sign of marital status. However, this is not a mandatory rule. Moreover, wearing gold jewelry for men is considered bad manners. As a rule, they allow themselves only silver items.

Jews

Orthodox (true believers) Jews wear wedding rings on the middle finger of their right hand. This is exactly what Joseph did when he took Mary as his wife, who later became the mother of Jesus.

The remaining representatives of “God’s chosen ones” act according to their understanding of what is traditional and comfortable. There is no pattern in this sense, since everyone tries to adhere to the customs of the country from which he or his ancestors arrived to the promised land.

How to choose an engagement ring

When choosing a ring, it is important to consider the wearer's personal preferences and style. The engagement ring should be unique and reflect the individuality of each spouse. Currently, the popular materials for engagement rings are gold, platinum and silver. Often the ring is decorated with inserts of precious stones or has a special relief design, symbolizing important moments and events for the couple.
