An unusual device capable of transmitting impacts from bullets
In 2007, the 3rd Space Vest was introduced at the Game Developers conference.
Quite an interesting addition for a desktop gaming computer.
According to the idea, the player, having put on the device and launched a game, for example, Call Of Duty 2, could feel the explosion of a grenade or the impact of a bullet that hit his character.
3rd Space Vest was also able to imitate sword strikes. This will be used by developers in the future World of Warcraft.
The interaction of the vest with the body did not leave any bruises, and it also did not inflict strong blows, but any hit was quite noticeable.
The new product was presented by TN games, which specialized in selling virtual reality devices.
By the way, then, in addition to the vest, the company released the HTX helmet, which operated in a similar way, but the player’s head was already hit.
How did virtual bullets work?
TN games' proprietary technology used lightweight pneumatic compressors that hit the player in certain areas.
The technology was narrowly focused and, naturally, received support in a very small number of projects, but over time, an update was released for the device, expanding the list of games.
But what happened to the company over time?
And the most interesting thing is that the TN games company and its products, although they did not ultimately gain widespread popularity among computer players, are alive and well in 2021. Their equipment is purchased by military and law enforcement agencies and used for training.
There is also the opportunity to purchase a vest for ordinary players, customizing it to the size, color and needs.
Considering that there are very few analogues on the gaming market, the technology can still be considered innovative.
As time has shown, players are not very interested in such a gaming experience, and these vests fit much more organically into exercises or into some kind of attraction.
