This is one of the most common vegetables, without which borscht, vinaigrette and herring under a fur coat are unthinkable. But still, the use of this root vegetable is not recommended for everyone. Why do some people feel unwell after eating beets, and what health problems can it cause in the presence of chronic diseases?
The product contains iron, boron and manganese, which help strengthen the immune system and regulate metabolism. The vegetable is good for the intestines and regulates microflora.
Due to the presence of antioxidants, eating beets fresh helps remove waste and toxins from the body and helps reduce cholesterol. Plus, the root vegetable has a strengthening effect on bones and joints, helps normalize the functioning of the heart and blood vessels, and increases energy and performance.
Undesirable combinations and risk factors
But this product, like any other, cannot consist of only advantages. Since the pulp contains chlorine, if beets are actively consumed, it has an irritating effect on the mucous membranes and can cause soreness and tingling in the throat. If the feeling of discomfort does not go away for a long time, then we are talking about an allergic reaction, which can be complicated by swelling, fever and an increase in the size of the lymph nodes.
By the way, it is not advisable to get carried away with the proven and beloved combination used for beet salad: beets, garlic, mayonnaise, since it significantly increases the load on the heart.
Beets should not be eaten if you have allergies and individual intolerances, kidney failure, a tendency to bloating and diarrhea, or diabetes.
This vegetable is prohibited for hypotensive people, as it has the ability to further lower blood pressure. Due to its ability to remove calcium from the body, it is undesirable to include the vegetable in the diet of patients with osteoporosis, children under 5 years of age, and the elderly.
To cook or not to cook?
Boiled and raw beets are different products. And this point must be taken into account when planning a diet that includes root vegetables. During heat treatment, the main part of the fruit loses most of the vitamins and, accordingly, benefits. Beets are no exception and lose almost all vitamin C, as well as B6 and B9, when cooked.
Fresh beets, in addition to retaining all vitamins, are also a dietary product and, accordingly, are suitable for the diet of those who watch their diet and want to lose weight.
In the case when the root vegetable is needed for some dishes in boiled form, you can proceed as follows: boil it for 15 minutes without peeling, then drain the water, wait until it cools completely and remove the peel.
