Nobel laureate in chemistry Akire Suzuki believes that the world is at the first stage of studying the world of matter and colossal discoveries are still awaiting humanity.

Now it seems to us that the universe is unlikely to surprise us with anything. We have already flown into space, found water on Mars, all the information in the world is in our pocket, and very soon holographic calls will become our new reality. But chemistry is interesting!

Hot water turns to ice faster than cold water

This is such an insoluble paradox - the Mpemba effect. It was named after the African schoolboy who first became interested in this issue. Yes, if you put one glass of hot water in the freezer and another of cold water, the hot water will crystallize faster.

Science has not found an exact answer to the question of why this happens. In 2016, the scientific journal Nature published an article in which scientists proved the falsity of this effect and its absence.

But a year later, two groups of scientists refuted this article and provided evidence of the Mpemba paradox. The debate continues to this day.

Creation of a “liquid” robot, a prototype of the T-1000 Terminator

The device was assembled from a plastic wheel, a lithium battery and a drop of liquid gallium. This entire structure fits in the palm of your hand and, according to scientists, this scientific discovery has enormous potential. Gallium alloys have surface tension, high electrical conductivity, and powerful flexibility.

Further work in this direction will help create a full-fledged terminator and it will be able to penetrate hard-to-reach places, saving people from the rubble, or spying for the military.

Gastric juice can dissolve metal

In addition to ions, enzymes and organic acids, gastric juice also contains hydrochloric acid - 0.6%

In terms of pH, gastric juice is between citric and sulfuric acids. The stomach is capable of dissolving teeth, bones, meat, even metal. The latter, however, will take a lot of time. For example, the needle will not have time to dissolve and will descend into the lower gastrointestinal tract with the rest of the food.

Silver disinfects water

This metal is capable of killing pathogenic microorganisms in liquid. This property of silver is used to destroy bacteria during long-term storage of water on ships.

That’s why everyone believes so much in the healing properties of holy water, because a silver cross immersed in it disinfects the liquid. There is a myth that if you throw a silver spoon into a glass of dirty water, the water will become drinkable after some time. But the concentration of silver in a spoon will not be enough to destroy all pathogens. You can drink this water, but with caution.

We are all people of gold

The average person weighing 70 kg contains 0.229 milligrams of gold. It is concentrated in the kidneys, liver and blood. According to assumptions, gold plays a role similar to the role of silver - it participates in immune processes and suppresses the activity of pathogens.

Pills to stop you from getting drunk

Back in 2011, Australian scientists led by Mark Hutchinson invented a drug that can block toll-like receptor 4, a membrane protein that is part of the innate immune system.

TLR4 is responsible for behavioral changes under the influence of alcohol: depression of consciousness, loss of control over muscles that are involved in speech and walking. These are factors that arise as a response to acute intoxication of the body.

After suppressing the receptor, a drunk person will be cheerful and full of energy, which to some extent neutralizes the effect of drinking alcohol. Researchers claim that the drug will allow people with alcohol addiction to cope with this disease.

Green blood exists

Yes, this is a symptom of a rare disease - sulfhemoglobinemia.

Blood acquires this unusual color as a result of a chemical reaction after the addition of a sulfur atom to the hemoglobin protein. In this case, hemoglobin simply loses its ability to transport oxygen to the tissues.

You can get sick with this difficult-to-pronounce disease by overusing certain medications or after working with sulfur compounds for a long time. It can be cured by transfusion of healthy blood. In some cases, the disease may cause the blood to turn blue.

Natural blue blood, by the way, exists, but only in scorpions, octopuses and spiders.

There is, however, a case in history with the American Paul Karason. For 10 years, he took doses of colloidal silver mixed with water for antiseptic purposes. His skin turned blue and problems with his organs appeared. He died at 62 years old.
