Mysteries of the Solar System: what we don’t yet know about our cosmic home (8 photos)
So, okay, we know a lot about our planet, and it’s time to finally study space. And, it would seem, we have already studied enough, and we can finally move on to galaxies. Or not?
The fact is that man is such a small but intelligent creature that he climbs into places where he cannot live. And the whole space is no exception. But while we are discussing what is there in the depths of deep space, we forget that even our Solar system has not yet been fully studied. And here are three riddles that we (yet) cannot answer.
Riddle No. 1. Venusian hell
The conditions on the planet, named after the goddess of love, are truly unbearable and impossible to live there. The atmosphere consists of carbon dioxide, which makes it very stuffy there (yes, stuffier than in St. Petersburg when the heat is 35 degrees), and eventually a greenhouse effect appeared there. And because of this, the temperature there is clearly hotter than anywhere else - about 475 degrees Celsius.
There are clouds of sulfuric acid floating there, and it’s also covered in volcanic rocks. The pressure there is also the same - it is 92 times higher than on Earth. However, many scientists are sure: once upon a time it was generally acceptable on Venus.
The second planet from the Sun once had oceans, and the atmosphere even had good conditions for life to arise there. One reputable volcanologist, Robin Andrews, believes that Venus was very similar to Earth. Both planets appeared approximately at the same time, and at the same time from the same materials. But on Venus you can only melt, while on Earth you can live. Science doesn’t quite know why this happened, but there are two hypotheses.
The first is the too close Sun, which literally incinerated it and caused global warming. And the second is that volcanoes were too active on the planet, and as a result, a global greenhouse effect occurred. Cooler than the one that destroyed the dinosaurs, yes.
Riddle No. 2. Moon parasites
If you don't believe in conspiracy theories, then you know that 12 people have already walked on the moon. But in order to return from there, and to save space, the astronauts left behind a lot of debris on the satellite.
These include shoes, two golf balls (what? yeah!), 5 US flags, television cameras, and even napkins and food packaging. There were also medals in honor of Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Komarov.
In addition, there were 96 bags of vomit and excrement left there. And now, since 50 years have passed since the last mission, scientists are asking the question: are there living organisms left there? And if so, then maybe it will be possible to answer the question, did life appear on Earth from the outside? Only the next lunar mission, which is planned for a very long time, will be able to answer.
Riddle No. 3. Was there life on Mars?
If a hundred years ago H.G. Wells wrote about the invasion of Martians, now we know (almost) for sure: there is no life on the Red Planet. In any case, there are no signs.
But in the past everything could have been different. Astrobiologists believe that Mars is very, very different from the planet it was 4 billion years ago, and research confirms this. There are remains of the delta of a large river that could flow here. And it was a really large river, since we can still see its delta.
And if there was a river, there was probably life. And only probable flights to the planet will answer this question.
