Why does the body produce alcohol and how much (5 photos)

Ethanol, which is formed in the body during biochemical reactions, is called endogenous alcohol.

All cells of internal organs and tissues contain alcohol, which plays an important role in metabolism. On average, the digestive system produces 3 to 10 grams of ethanol per day, getting it from fermented foods eaten. The natural level of alcohol in the blood is no more than 0.01 ppm.

Alcohol levels can be affected by your physical and mental state. The level of endogenous alcohol decreases during periods of stress, with aging and intense physical activity.

But situations that are associated with positive emotions, for example falling in love, increase the concentration of ethanol in the blood. It’s not for nothing that they say that when you fall in love, you walk like you’re drunk.

The fact is that ethanol is involved in carbohydrate metabolism, the synthesis of morphine-like compounds (opioids), and regulates the activity of neurotransmitters, some proteins and peptides. This makes it an important component in energy production and adaptive processes.

A decrease in the level of endogenous alcohol, as well as its excess, lead to a disruption of functional and metabolic homeostasis - the ability of the body to self-regulate.

Interestingly, in medical practice there were cases when the digestive system malfunctioned and produced an increased amount of ethanol, which made the person drunk. This condition is called brewer's syndrome.

The level of ethanol in the blood may increase due to short bowel syndrome or abnormalities in the liver, when the process of catabolism of the substance is disrupted.

But there are more interesting cases when a person becomes infected with the yeast bacteria Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Microorganisms ferment carbohydrates in the intestines, literally turning it into a real brewery. A person eats, bacteria cause carbohydrates to ferment, producing alcohol, and that’s how the unfortunate person gets drunk.

Once, one woman had microbes located in her bladder and thus provoked cirrhosis of the liver. And a certain 27-year-old man got drunk from sweet soda.

At the same time, very often such patients are ignored by doctors and people live their whole lives with the label of an alcoholic.
