The lion-tailed macaque - vanderu - is an outstanding personality in every sense. Endemic to the Western Ghats, in western India, it really resembles the king of beasts - with a luxurious mane and a tuft on the tail.
Vanderu's habits are also royal. Monkeys are proud and lead a solitary life, wary of both bipeds and representatives of other species. Which is quite justified, because out of the huge population today there are just over three thousand animals left. Urbanization is taking its toll, during which people are slowly but surely taking over the ancestral monkey territories.
But not only progress has an effect on the deterioration of the demographic situation of this species. The fact is that dashing primates, capable of even developing and implementing daring plans to rob leather food warehouses, are also picky in matters of the soul.
Males look closely and sniff at the potential lady of their heart for a long time. The process is also complicated by a rather late puberty: guys with a lion’s tail only become enlightened after the seventh year of life.
When a couple has a baby, the new mother completely dissolves in the baby, ignoring the interests of her partner (which is not surprising with such selectivity). For the first six months, the offspring does not leave its mother, riding on her back or sitting in an embrace. But after the specified time, the parent gradually loosens the reins, giving the heir more and more freedom.
Grown-up females remain in the colony family. But the boys have to test themselves and the world for strength, because the pack does not need a huge number of representatives of the stronger half - competition. Therefore, males first organize a bachelor group, and then join other flocks or organize their own.
The standard composition of a family is 2-3 adult males, one of which is always alpha, 20-30 females and babies. With such an abundance of charms, the vander still manages to take an impermissibly long time to choose the lady of their heart, making their lion-maned face. Moreover, females are silent and submissive creatures. And they won’t make an unnecessary sound (this is the prerogative of males). Perhaps only during mating games or when calling a child.
Monkeys love fruits, and real serious battles take place over the right to eat them. But they also don’t disdain small animals such as rodents, because the body needs protein.
Lion-tailed macaques are very ancient creatures. They are descendants of the first macaques to arrive from Africa. And more than 5 million years have passed since that moment. And man, who mastered these territories much later, is gradually reclaiming the original habitat of the monkeys. Authentic handsome guys die under the wheels of cars and from electric shocks, trying to move along power lines as if along tree branches.
Vanderu must live. They did not deserve to be classified as extinct. Therefore, efforts must be made to preserve this species in order to preserve this entire wonderful world in its full diversity.
