Mind blowing phenomena straight from space (9 photos)

Man began to explore space relatively recently, just over sixty years ago. But the Universe is infinite, and therefore much of everything that happens in space remains a mystery to us. Let's look at the most unusual and strange phenomena in space.

Galactic cannibalism

Yes, not only animals eat their own kind. A striking example of galactic cannibalism was Andromeda, which devours its small neighbors one after another.

Her diet already included about ten small neighbors. But the Milky Way is devouring the Dwarf spheroidal galaxy in the constellation Sagittarius. And it will finish it in about a billion years.

By the way, this is not the only form of interaction between galaxies. Sometimes they just collide with each other and then move on. Traces of such collisions have been found in about 20 thousand galaxies.

Gravitational waves

Only time and... gravity are eternal. It is important to understand that gravitational waves are a distortion of space-time.

The phenomenon was predicted by Albert Einstein himself, who developed the general theory of relativity.

These same waves move at the speed of light and are extremely difficult to catch. Astronomers say it is possible to do this, but it requires the use of huge laser interferometric observatories.

Since a gravitational wave is emitted by any moving accelerated matter, a huge mass of the emitter is required. But then another object will also act on it? Thus, gravitational waves are emitted by a pair of objects. That is, colliding galaxies will be the most advantageous objects to study.

Boomerang Nebula

Space in general is very cold. The average temperature of outer space is only 2.7 degrees Kelvin.

At the same time, there is an even colder place - the Boomerang Nebula, the temperature inside of which is only 1K. Yes, yes, just above absolute zero.

Quasars

For a long time it was believed that quasars may not exist at all. These are sort of lighthouses that are located on the margins of the Universe, and which are echoes of its origin.

Quasars emit simply enormous energy, comparable only to the energy of hundreds of galaxies.

Some scientists suggest that quasars are black holes that are located at the center of distant galaxies. Currently, quasars are considered to be objects with variable radiation.

Previously, these included objects that emit strong radio emission, but are small in size. Then it turned out that only 10% of all objects that were called quasars met the definition, and after that it became clear that some quasars do not emit radio waves at all.

Now there is a theory according to which a quasar is an incipient galaxy, inside of which there is a giant black hole that absorbs the surrounding matter.

Singing planets

In space, due to the fact that there is practically a vacuum, there is absolute silence. But if the sounds did reach us, we would hear a lot of interesting things. NASA once even published the radio emission converted into sound waves that the planets of our solar system produce.

Micro black holes

Physicist Stephen Hawking once suggested that the Big Bang theory does not correspond to the real state of affairs. He has many supporters, and they believe that our entire Universe has microscopic black holes here and there.

They supposedly have connections with another dimension, influencing space-time. So far, their existence has not been proven, and it is impossible to verify it experimentally.

Perhaps research at the Large Hadron Collider will shed light on their existence. But for now we can only guess whether they exist or not.

Microwave space background

This phenomenon was discovered only in the 60s of the last century. Then scientists came to the conclusion that weak radiation is emitted throughout our space and from everywhere. You may know it by another name: cosmic microwave background radiation.

These are probably the remnants of the Big Bang, and this is one of the arguments in favor of the theory. It was even possible to measure the temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation - minus 270 degrees.

Storm in the galaxy

Even the storms on Jupiter cannot be compared with what is happening in the 3C303 galaxy.

At the center of the star cluster is a supermassive black hole that creates powerful magnetic fields. It also produces a current of 10 to the 18th power of Ampere.

Just compare: the most powerful lightning on Earth has a power of only up to 500 thousand Amperes.

In addition, the jet from the black hole in this galaxy reaches a length of 150 thousand light years - which is greater than the estimated diameter of the Milky Way. So that's how things are.
