Dangerous Dave: a game about a famous guy with a shotgun (13 photos)

Many of those who had access to a computer in the 90s certainly saw and even played the game "Dangerous Dave in the haunted mansion", where a certain guy with a shotgun in a red cap explored an old house filled with evil spirits in order to save own brother. But this was not the only or even the first game in this series.





Dangerous Dave (1988)

Dave's story began back in 1988. The author and developer of this game was the legendary John Romero, who had a hand in creating such cult games as "Wolfenstein 3D" and "Doom".



The first version was released for Applw II computers and had only 6 colors in its arsenal.

This game is completely different from the well-known game about Dave, which will be discussed further. The goal of the game is to complete all 10 levels, collecting the golden bowls at the end of each one and avoiding or destroying the enemies we encounter.





In addition, there are many other dangers in the game, including water, fire, plants, etc. And if the character dies, you will have to start the level from the very beginning.

In 1990, this game was ported to computers running DOS, but most gamers of the 90s had never even seen it.

Dangerous Dave in the haunted mansion (1991)



In 1991, the same famous game that many of us played in the early to mid-90s was released. And this game is sharply different from its predecessor.

The graphics became 2 orders of magnitude better, Dave was given a full-fledged 8-round shotgun, with which he deftly dealt with evil spirits, and the game itself became much more dynamic and interesting. Just look at the variety of enemies and the unique animation of death at the hands of each of them.



Dangerous Dave 2: Dave's Risky rescue (1993)



In 1993, a continuation of the game about Dave was released. In this game, our hero will again have to save his brother, but this time from the crazy doctor Nemesis.

The game mechanics have not changed much compared to the first part, and the graphics, for the most part, have remained almost the same, although a little worse. But the gameplay itself really let us down. But why? Most likely, the whole point is that this game was not developed by John Romero, but by third-party developers. Therefore, the game turned out to be not so atmospheric, and the colors were kind of eye-popping.



But still, one small difference was introduced into the game. Now the shotgun ammo is no longer infinite, so Dave will constantly have to replenish his ammo by collecting ammo lying around the levels.

Dangerous Dave 3: Dave goes nutz! (1993)



The third episode about Dave again revolves around his brother, whom Doctor Nemesis put in a mental hospital, and now Dave has to free his close relative by destroying the evil spirits in the clothes of the medical staff. Moreover, the evil spirits are the same enemies as in the “haunted house”, they just changed slightly in appearance.



Stylistically, the game is still similar to "Dangerous Dave in haunted mansion", but in essence it is a continuation of the second episode of "Dave's Risky rescue".

In this part, the cartridges again became infinite, but now their number was reduced to six. True, the game itself has become much easier than the previous parts. At least the first few levels could be completed without problems the first time.



Also, a rather interesting type of enemies appeared in the game, namely security officers who have the same model as Dave himself and are also armed with a shotgun.



In principle, this game still looks more interesting than the previous part, but still worse than everyone’s favorite “Dangerous Dave in haunted mansion”. And yet, the fact that our hero has to run through the same locations with the same surroundings is a little annoying.

Dangerous Dave Remake (2021)



Despite the fact that the game “Dangerous Dave in Haunted Mansion” was the most popular in the series, a remake of the very first part was released in 2021.

The game exactly repeated the original in terms of gameplay. The only differences were in the graphics. True, the graphics cannot be called modern. It feels like the game was created for smartphones 10 years ago. In principle, there is nothing more to say about this game.
