10 film series that managed to stop on time and ended on a high note (11 photos)
As you know, many film franchises that are successful at the start eventually turn into a soulless machine for pumping money out of viewers.
New parts are stamped, but the artistic qualities are eroded more and more each time. More recently, we wrote about those series of films that have already exhausted all their charm, but continue to exist in the form of ever new sequels, but today we will look at the opposite examples. Namely, a series of films that managed not to slide and went away beautifully.
We measured the level of success of the films using audience ratings, and we must immediately clarify that this is NOT a list of those cases when subsequent parts were no worse/better than the previous ones. In half the cases, ratings for sequels are still lower than for the first parts, but they, nevertheless, still remain high, which happens very, very rarely.
One limitation: we do not take into account films, all parts of which were fairly accurately based on the literary source, that is, “The Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” will not be here.
Well, here they are - handsome men who haven’t rolled off!
1. Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy
Batman Begins (2005) - 7.9
"The Dark Knight" (2008) - 8.5
The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - 8.1
“The Dark Knight” is considered one of the most successful sequels of all time in terms of improving all parameters compared to the first film.
2. Back to the Future - 3 films
Back to the Future (1985) - 8.6
Back to the Future 2 (1989) - 8.3
Back to the Future 3 (1990) - 8.2
From time to time, rumors appear on the Internet about a continuation or restart of the franchise, but the original creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale insist that this will definitely not happen in their lifetime.
3. Before Dawn - 3 films
"Before Sunrise" (1995) - 7.9
"Before Sunset" (2004) - 7.6
"Before Midnight" (2013) - 7.6
4. Toy Story - 4 films
"Toy Story" (1995) - 7.9
"Toy Story 2" (1999) - 7.8
"Toy Story: The Great Escape" (2010) - 7.8
"Toy Story 4" (2019) - 7.6
More recently, the creators took a seemingly dangerous step by releasing the fourth part, but it turned out to be the perfect conclusion to the story, and won an Oscar for Best Animated Film.
5. "Dollar Trilogy"
“A Fistful of Dollars” (1964) – 8.0
"For a Few Dollars More" (1965) - 8.2
"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966) - 8.5
6. The Wolverine Trilogy
"X-Men: Origins." Wolverine (2009) - 7.4
"Wolverine: Immortal" (2013) - 6.5
"Logan" (2017) - 7.5
This trilogy is set within the X-Men franchise, which as a whole is an example of an endless series of films that has noticeably slowed down in its final episodes.
7. Ocean's Trilogy
"Ocean's Eleven" (2001) - 8.1
"Ocean's Twelve" (2004) - 7.7
"Ocean's Thirteen" (2007) - 7.7
We do not take into account the film "Ocean's 8" (2018), because it is an obvious remake or spin-off, but definitely not a continuation.
8. How to train your dragon - 3 cartoons
How to Train Your Dragon (2010) - 8.2
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) - 7.9
