The film debate never ends. For some, 2023 was a year of complete disappointment and they didn’t like all the films. Others found only a couple of decent paintings for themselves. But there are also those who were happy with everything. Well, of course, every ordinary viewer believes that film critics are a group of corrupt parasites who know nothing about good cinema, unlike themselves. This conflict was, is and will always be. Critics liked most of the films in this selection, but judging by the “average” ratings, people didn’t like them. Take the same "Napoleon". Fans of the great Ridley Scott were delighted, but others found the film drawn out and boring. And sofa historians completely burned their sofas. And, of course, we must not forget about people who adhere to the motto: “I didn’t watch it, but I condemn it.” These guys automatically put a minus. So, let's take a look at the films of 2023 that did not live up to the audience's expectations and received low ratings.

Murderer

IMDb: 6.8

We thought Mank was an abnormally underrated film in director David Fincher's career. But three years later, he released an even less popular project - a slow and certainly stylish thriller about a pedantic and philosophizing assassin. And after watching, many people exclaimed: “Bring back Mank!”

Flash

IMDb: 6.7

This definitely wasn't the year of the superhero comic book movie. The Flash not only failed miserably at the box office, but was predicted to earn Warner Bros. a loss of 200 million dollars, but did not receive much love from the audience. Even with Michael Keaton returning as Batman!

Asteroid City

IMDb: 6.6

It seems that people are a little fed up with Wes Anderson, his symmetrical shots, specific humor, special color scheme, his own unique dynamics and a million stars in supporting roles.

Napoleon

IMDb: 6.6

Joaquin Phoenix as Bonaparte, Ridley Scott in the director's chair, epic scope and about $200 million budget. All this was not enough to prevent the film from being extremely reviewable, given how much there was to show, and in some places downright boring. In the future, humanity will definitely need another film about Napoleon, or better yet, a big-budget mini-series to fit all the main events into it.

Despite this, Joaquin Phoenix personally was unconditionally good!

Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fate

IMDb: 6.6

The final encounter with Harrison Ford as Indy could have been a great ending to the series, but it probably only came at the very end of the film. But its main part alienated the main character a little from the audience and, on the whole, according to critics, would be quite worthy of some other adventure story, but for the legendary Indiana Jones it is rather weak.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantomania

IMDb: 6.1

A film in which we were shown a “new Thanos” named and titled Kang the Conqueror, with whom Marvel superheroes will fight in future films. But something immediately went wrong. First of all, no one really liked the film. Secondly, actor Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and could receive a real prison sentence.

It seems that a new “new Thanos” is waiting for us.

No answer

IMDb: 5.8

Another project from Netflix, where they invited top actors, stuffing them into a second-rate action movie. This time, Ana de Armas and Chris Evans fell into the trap. And everything looked much more promising.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

IMDb: 6.0

If other comic projects this year failed to capture the audience’s soul, then these guys had no chance at all.

Heart's desire

IMDb: 5.8

Walt Disney Pictures released The Deepest Wish as a celebration of its 100th anniversary, with the goal of recalling all of its best techniques (such as classic watercolor animation) and themes. The cartoon is still in theaters, but it is already clear that it is both a box office and artistic failure for Disney. Critics note that the cartoon is stuck in playing on the nostalgic strings of the audience's soul and does not offer anything new or at least somewhat interesting.

Captain Marvel 2

IMDb: 5.9

And here it is - the film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the lowest, lowest audience rating. After this, the question arises: do people really still need superhero films based on comic books?

Barbie

IMDb: 7.0

Yes, the highest-grossing and most popular film of the year is a real modern film phenomenon. Yes, the critics are happy. But the audience ratings are really low.
