10 incredible medical cases that are hard to believe (11 photos)
The human body is a big mystery. Countless studies have been done to understand our anatomy, but our body never ceases to amaze us with what it is capable of. And the heroes of this post are direct proof of this.
1. Kiss of Death
In 2016, a guy in Mexico City died at just 17 years old after his girlfriend gave him a hickey on his neck. Doctors say the kiss caused a blood clot that eventually traveled to his brain and caused him to have a stroke.
2. False pregnancy
In 1809, 45-year-old Jane Todd Crawford was misdiagnosed by two doctors who assured her that she was pregnant with twins.
A third doctor, Dr. Ephraim McDowell, gave her a very different diagnosis: He suggested that Crawford had a large ovarian tumor and decided to remove it using an experimental operation that had not previously been performed. The doctor removed a tumor weighing 10 kg using the world's first oophorectomy. Fortunately, the woman managed to recover and lived to be 78 years old.
3. Too much soy sauce
A 19-year-old guy from Virginia decided to drink a liter of soy sauce on a dare. After this “feat,” the boy began to have convulsions and foam started coming out of his mouth. He was rushed to the emergency department of a local hospital, where the decision was made to place him in an induced coma. When doctors checked his blood sodium level, it was the highest level they had ever seen in an adult. The young man survived the poisoning without any long-term neurological problems.
4. Toxic lady
Gloria Ramirez was admitted to the hospital on February 19, 1994 with an oily sheen on her body and a garlicky breath odor. When doctors took blood, they noticed a strange smell. The medical personnel present felt unwell, and it was decided to evacuate the hospital building. Of the 23 people who fell ill, five had to be hospitalized. Gloria's official cause of death was determined to be kidney failure. But this did not explain her strange symptoms and the sudden illness of the hospital staff. She remains in the history of medicine as the “toxic lady.”
5. Genetic error
In 2013, a 66-year-old man from China consulted doctors about terrible abdominal pain.
After a thorough examination, they discovered that the 1.5 meter tall man with a beard and penis was in fact female, at least genetically. And the pain he felt was due to a large benign ovarian cyst.
6. Voices in my head
In 1984, a woman in England claimed to hear voices telling her she had a brain tumor.
The woman was being treated for hallucinatory psychosis but continued to hear voices insisting she needed a brain scan. In fact, the voices even revealed exactly where the tumor was located. After examination, doctors found a tumor exactly where the voices claimed.
7. Such identical twins
In 2003, Holly Marie Adams had sexual relations with Ramone and Richard Miller, identical twins, on the same day but at different times.
It turned out that Holly became pregnant and indicated that Raymond was the father, but he denied it. A paternity test showed that the probability of both brothers becoming fathers was greater than 99.9%. According to expert Dr. Bob Giles, there is no test that can tell the difference between two identical twins. In the end, the court decided that Raymond would pay alimony.
8. The story of a giant
In 1917, when Adam Rainer was 18 years old, his height was 1 meter 38 centimeters.
But when he turned 32, he was diagnosed with a tumor in his pituitary gland. He began to grow rapidly, and as a result his height was 2 meters 18 centimeters. Doctors tried to remove the tumor, but to no avail. When he died in 1950 at the age of 51, he was 2 meters 34 centimeters tall.
9. Survivor
In 1754, Ewan Macdonald was sentenced to death in Newcastle.
After he was hanged, doctors were ordered to perform an autopsy. To everyone's surprise, just as the surgeon was about to make the cut, Ewan sat up and immediately begged for mercy. But despite this, the sentence was carried out again.
10. Man - brewery
A man was rushed to the emergency room for being “dead drunk.” But he didn't actually drink a drop of alcohol. Doctors discovered that the 61-year-old man was somehow “brewing beer” in his intestines. He had yeast in his body, so when he ate foods rich in starch, the yeast fermented the sugar into ethanol. This turned it into a “human brewery.”
