These medical operations are amazing (7 photos)

Surgeons are capable of doing simply incredible things that are more like magic than the work of a doctor.

But, of course, not only surgeons. Operations are the coordinated work of all medical workers involved in the operation: from the anesthesiologist to the nurses. During an operation, the team is a single organism, where everyone clearly knows what to do.

Removing half the brain

According to some sources, this is Jesse now

On June 11, 2008, six-year-old Jessie Hull, suffering from Rasmussen's encephalitis, had the right lobe of her brain removed. Ben Carson from the Joe Hopkins Children's Medical Center in Baltimore performed one of the rarest operations, which was the girl's only chance of survival. In this case, the remaining half of the brain takes over (partially) the functions of the one that was removed. The girl's personality and memory were not affected.

Operation lasting 4 days

In February 1951, doctors at a Chicago hospital spent 96 hours removing a huge ovarian cyst from 58-year-old Gertrude Lewandowski. This is the longest operation in the history of medicine. Before it started, Lewandowski weighed 277 kg, and after - 138 kg. Surgeons removed the mass very slowly and carefully so that the patient did not experience a sharp drop in blood pressure.

Surgery in the womb

An operation was performed on a 22-week-old baby in the womb of 22-year-old Kylie Bowlen at an Australian medical center.

A unique anomaly occurred with the fetus - the amniotic threads pulled over his ankles and blocked blood access to his knees. In such cases, surgeons perform operations no earlier than the 28th week of fetal development, but this time the unborn child could lose both legs. By the time the operation began, the child’s right leg was already infected and inoperable (it was operated on after the child was four years old), but the left leg was saved. At the time of the operation, the fetus was only 17 cm tall.

Self-operation

Evan O'Neill Kane. Removal of inguinal hernia.

In 1921, surgeon Evan O'Neill Kane removed his own appendix using only local anesthesia. Three doctors were on duty in the next room, just in case. The operation went off without a hitch and, inspired by the success, in 1923 Kane performed another operation on himself, a more complicated one - he removed an inguinal hernia. In the process, he even managed to make witticisms.

Face transplant

31-year-old Pascal Kohler underwent surgery in the winter of 2007. He suffered from a rare disease - neurofibromatosis (Recklinghausen's disease), which terribly disfigured his face. The huge tumor did not allow Pascal to eat normally and he became a real recluse, afraid to go out so as not to attract indignant and frightened looks.

In 16 hours, Professor Laurent Lantieri and his colleagues completely transplanted Pascal's face from a deceased donor. Moreover, the patient does not look like his donor, because his facial bones remained intact. There is an assumption that the world-famous “elephant man” Joseph Merrick suffered from a similar disease 100 years ago.

Born twice

Keri McCartney, six months pregnant, discovered that a deadly tumor was growing on her tailbone. Surgeons at the Children's Hospital in Houston removed the uterus from Keri's body, opened it, lifted 80% of the fetus, leaving only the head and shoulders inside, and then quickly removed the tumor. The fetus was then placed back into the uterus, closing the amniotic sac to try to retain amniotic fluid as long as possible.

The child was born “the second time” after the prescribed 10 weeks and was absolutely healthy.
