How do you think? What is the largest plant in the world?
Mushrooms immediately come to mind, although they are not correctly classified as part of the plant kingdom. If not mushrooms, then maybe some plants from the tropical forests.
You will be surprised, but the largest plant is located in Australia. More precisely, in Shark Bay, which is located off the coast of the green continent.
Scientists have found that the algae located in this water area are actually shoots of one plant. The algae Posidonia australis, which by scientists’ standards is already more than 4.5 thousand years old, has become the full and sole owner of the western coast of Australia.
The Australian Poseidonia has an area of 200 square kilometers, making it the largest plant in the world.
This is such a huge plant that it outstrips its closest pursuers several hundred times. And Posidonia australis has created a real closed ecosystem, which has become home to dozens of species of fish, turtles and other marine life.
This algae grows by 35 centimeters per year, and it is not afraid of even difficult climatic conditions, because in its habitat there are extremely salty areas, and the temperature varies from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius.
