The vet named 9 breeds of dogs and cats that he would never buy (12 photos)
Many animal lovers have favorite breeds that they would not trade for others. A veterinary surgeon named Ben the Vet revealed which 5 dog breeds and 4 cat breeds he would never own. Let's find out why.
"I'm a veterinarian, and here are 4 cat breeds that I personally would never consider buying. If it were a shelter animal and it needed a home, that would be a different matter. But I'm talking about a targeted purchase," says the veterinarian. Here are the cat breeds he named and why:
Persian cat
"Persian cats have flat faces, and this can cause a lot of health problems and difficulties in the cat's daily life. They have very small nostrils, and the nasal passages are placed irregularly, which is why a long soft palate is formed. Also, due to the shape of the head and the location of the eyes, they have eye diseases. They are also predisposed to heart disease and polycystic kidney disease (40% of the breed suffers from it),” said the veterinarian.
Bengal cat
"Bengal cats are beautiful, they have magnificent fur. But few people know that they were the result of crossing a wild Bengal (or Far Eastern) cat with a domestic cat. Therefore, they are still a little wild in terms of temperament and behavior. At an appointment with a veterinarian, they may be aggressive. They are very intelligent and require constant mental stimulation. Unfortunately, most often they are kept in inappropriate conditions,” says the doctor.
Sphinx
“I have nothing against sphinxes, they are beautiful. It’s just that for me a cat is always a fluffy creature.” In addition, it is a fact: cats of this breed often do not tolerate loneliness and are very attached to their owners.
Scottish fold cat
Hanging ears are the main feature of these cats. But they appeared as a result of osteochondrodysplasia - a disorder of the development of cartilage tissue. They also have this problem with joints throughout the body. This is why even young cats of this breed are often diagnosed with arthritis. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
"Almost all dogs of this breed have a heart problem - mitral valve disease. Many of them in old age cough a lot, breathe heavily and drool excessively. Breeding dogs with such a tendency is simply cruel to the animal."
Chow chow
"I'm sure they are cute creatures, but often they don't have a very good temperament. They can act aloof and quite aggressive, for example, at the vet's office. Eye diseases are very common in this breed."
Shar Pei
“Among Shar-Peis, a genetic disease of the same name is common - hereditary Shar-Pei fever. Also, due to too deep wrinkles, they often suffer from skin problems. When examined by a veterinarian, it is Shar-Peis who are extremely aggressive and try to bite.”
Pug and other flat-faced breeds
"Many people in society think that the 'grunting' of these dogs is funny, but in fact, it is a sign of breathing problems. Dogs with flat faces are also susceptible to spinal diseases, skin problems and eye problems. It is also alarming that most of these dogs breeds, a cesarean section is indicated at the birth of offspring."
Dachshunds
“Dachshunds are the sweetest creatures and my frequent patients. About one in four dachshunds worldwide suffer from back problems. These can range from simple pain to paralysis that requires surgery. Dogs have a long recovery from such surgery.”
