At the end of the 2000s, you can see a whole chain of iconic villains, for whose roles actors received statuettes for three years in a row. Let's remember them, as well as other actors, their characters and the films themselves.

We show you the winners in yet another acting category at the Oscars in the 21st century. Here are 20 actors (two of them received two statuettes in 22 years) who did not need to shine in front of the audience for the entire film in order to be remembered by them for playing their characters.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, more than in any other category, there are often so-called “Oscar-winning villains” - well-played on-screen villains, on the confrontation with whom the film’s dramaturgy is built by the main characters.

2001 - Benicio del Toro

For his role in the film "Traffic".

Three years later, he was nominated again for his role in the film “21 Grams,” but did not win.

2002 - Jim Broadbent

For his role in the film "Iris".

This is still the only nomination for the 73-year-old actor.

2003 - Chris Cooper

For his role in the film "Adaptation".

Also, except for this case, he was never nominated.

2004 - Tim Robbins

For his role in the film "Mystic River".

He was nominated one more time, but not for The Shawshank Redemption. And not for acting at all - he received a nomination as best director for the film “Dead Man Walking” (1995).

And he escaped from prison, and directed the film cool!

2005 - Morgan Freeman

For his role in the film “Million Dollar Baby.”

Following Robbins, Morgan Freeman also left Shawshank to pick up his only Oscar in his career. In total, the actor has 5 nominations, in four different decades.

2006 - George Clooney

For his role in the film "Syriana".

In total, George Clooney has eight Oscar nominations, with only half of them for acting. The other four were for director and best original screenplay (Good Night and Good Luck, 2006), best adapted screenplay (The Ides of March, 2011) and best film as a producer for Argo (2013). The last project even brought him a second Oscar.

2007 - Alan Arkin

For her role in the film "Little Miss Sunshine."

In total, the actor has four nominations, but only one victory.

2008 - Javier Bardem

For his role in the film “No Country for Old Men.”

In addition, he was nominated three more times, but without winning.

2009 - Heath Ledger

For his role in the film "The Dark Knight".

Previously, he was nominated for Best Actor in the film Brokeback Mountain.

2010 - Christoph Waltz

For his role in the film Inglourious Basterds.

Waltz has starred with Tarantino twice, so we're not saying goodbye.

2011 - Christian Bale

For his role in the film "The Fighter".

After that, he was nominated three more times.

2012 - Christopher Plummer

For his role in the film "Beginners".

In total, the actor has three Oscar nominations, the first of which he received at the age of 79! Plummer received his third nomination when he was 88 years old—he is still the oldest actor to be nominated by the Academy.

2013 - Christoph Waltz

For his role in the film Django Unchained.

As you understand, these two Oscar wins for roles in Quentin Tarantino’s films are the only nominations in the career of the Austrian actor.

2014 - Jared Leto

For his role in the film “Dallas Buyers Club”.

The only Oscar nomination in the actor's career.

2015 - J.K. Simmons

For his role in the film "Obsession".

Most recently, he was nominated again - in 2022 for his role in the film Being Ricardo.

2016 - Mark Rylance

For his role in the film "Bridge of Spies".

The only Oscar nomination in the actor's career.

2017 - Mahershala Ali

For his role in the film "Moonlight".

We will see this actor again.

2018 - Sam Rockwell

For his role in the film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

After that, he was nominated for his role in the film “Power,” where he played George W. Bush.

2019 - Mahershala Ali

For his role in the film "Green Book".

Like Christoph Waltz, this Oscar doublet is the actor's only two nominations so far.

2020 - Brad Pitt

For his role in the film “Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood”.

In total, the actor has 4 acting Oscar nominations and 3 more producer nominations. So Pitt received his first Oscar as the producer of the best film of the year (in 2014 for “12 Years a Slave”).

2021 - Daniel Kaluuya

For his role in the film “Judas and the Black Messiah”.

Previously, he was nominated for the film Get Out.

2022 - Troy Kotsur

For his role in the film “CODA: Child of Deaf Parents.”

He became the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar. Before him, Marlee Matlin, who lost her hearing as a child, took the award in 1987 for her role in the film Children of a Lesser God.

2023 - who will win?

Nominees:

Brendan Gleeson for his role in the film "The Banshee of Inisherina"

Barry Keoghan for his role in the film "The Banshee of Inisherina"

Brian Tyree Henry for his role in the film "Bridge on the Lake"
