Non-children's fairy tales: a selection of Soviet cartoons not for children's viewing (14 photos)
Well, let's continue our film section dedicated to completely non-children's cartoons that were created during the times of the USSR. When viewing them, a small viewer is unlikely to understand what the author wanted to tell, and he may also be seriously frightened. And to be honest, it’s worth noting that even adults can feel uneasy from such cartoons. Let's take a look at a new series of creepy creations by Soviet animators.
"Obsession" (1989)
This plasticine cartoon is based on a Ukrainian folk tale.
The plot tells the story of a man who once found a treasure. The hero had a talkative wife, so he was very afraid that someone would become aware of the valuable find. Therefore, the man came up with a cunning plan that was supposed to silence her.
The cartoon is full of frightening and even creepy metaphors. The disturbing music deserves special attention.
"Bear - Lime Leg" (1984)
Another folk tale. She is less frightening, but also deserves our attention. The story tells of a clueless clubfoot who climbed into an apiary and accidentally got his paw stuck in a hive.
It seems that the creators' only goal was to scare everyone they could. Just look at the creepy, overlapping black shadows and characters with empty white eye sockets.
"Two Maples" (1977)
The evil Baba Yaga kidnaps the sons of Vasilisa the worker and turns them into two maples. A woman has to work for a villain to save her children. This is an extremely touching story about the power of maternal love, which ultimately defeats evil. However, in what a gloomy style the cartoon is made. It’s simply impossible to watch it and not wince at every tense moment. And what about Babi Yaga's appearance? This is the epitome of horror!
"Northern Tale" (1979)
There are no creepy images or a frightening atmosphere in this cartoon, but that doesn’t make it any less scary. The story tells of a kind and hardworking mother who was treated poorly by her children. They ignore their parent in every possible way and do not want to help her. In the end, mom turns into a bird and leaves her home. The story is shocking with its ending and hits the deepest childhood fears.
"Terrible Revenge" (1987)
A cartoon based on the famous work of Nikolai Gogol. The story is filled with mystical and creepy moments that keep the viewer in suspense for a long time. You could even say that the cartoon contains some elements of good old horror films.
"Vampires of Geons" (1991)
The cartoon shows the difficulties that people have to face when exploring alien planets. The animated film is full of creepy moments, it impresses with terrible images of monsters and a complete atmosphere of hopelessness.
"Bear" (1988)
The main character, the bear, has surreal and extremely creepy nightmares. Various animals live in his dreams and do something unknown. Do you want to plunge into indescribable madness? Then you definitely need to see this.
"The Pass" (1988)
An extremely darkly drawn, but at the same time atmospherically voiced cartoon. He immerses us in the story of earthlings who crashed on a spaceship. They are trying with all their might to adapt to the new reality, but they are not very successful.
"Tale of Tales" (1979)
An alarming and sad cartoon touching on the theme of war.
"White Heron" (1987)
The dark puppet cartoon tells the story of a princess, on whose orders a heron was killed for the sake of beautiful feathers. Subsequently, people began to target the destruction of beautiful birds in order to get feathers and make fashionable headdresses from them. Suddenly the main character herself turns into a white heron.
The cartoon keeps you in suspense throughout the entire story. And the sad ending makes you feel incredible confusion and devastation.
"Dialogue. The Mole and the Egg (1987)
The cartoon is drawn in bright and pleasant colors. Its beginning does not cause any rejection. However, the main horror here lies in the plot - the mole communicates with the unhatched chick through the shell of the egg. The two discuss various philosophical topics and have fun in each other’s company. At the end of the cartoon, the mole calmly eats his new friend and walks away.
"Kele" (1988)
The cartoon tells the story of a mythical creature that kidnapped two little girls. The minimalist art and the constant tension from the observed chase make you seriously nervous.
“The history of one city. Organ" (1991)
The cartoon is based on the classic story by Saltykov-Shchedrin. The story takes place in the fictional city of Foolov, where not particularly smart, but flexible residents live. One day they send them another mayor - a stern and even formidable man. The new ruler was received with joy. Only then one day the residents find their benefactor in an extremely unusual state.
The visuals of the cartoon are downright surreal horror. So be careful if you decide to watch it at night.
"The Fox and the Hare" (1973)
Who doesn’t know the fairy tale about the unfortunate hare who was kicked out of his own house by the fox? A great educational story about friendship. However, it is extremely strange to film it with such a terrifying video sequence. Characters with devastated facial expressions and black, empty eyes evoke particular horror.
