Stills from the filming and interesting facts about the film "Die Hard" that many people don't know about (13 photos)
The film "Die Hard", released in 1988, became not only a real hit, but also revealed Bruce Willis as an action star, because before that he was assigned the role of a comedian. Moreover, the film became essentially a pioneer in the genre of action film in a closed space.
And today I would like to tell you some interesting facts about the film "Die Hard", as well as show interesting footage from the filming of this film.
1. Initially, it was planned that Arnold Schwarzenegger would play the leading role in the film "Die Hard". Also, a rumor spread online that the film itself was supposed to be essentially a continuation of the film “Commando.” But Arnie refused to film, which is why the script had to be rewritten. The screenwriter of the film “Die Hard” himself refuted this myth, saying that nothing like that happened.
Also, Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds were invited to play this role, but they also refused to star in this film. As a result, the filmmakers decided to try the little-known actor Brbs Willis for this role, who had previously only acted in comedies and TV series. Wheelis gained the greatest popularity thanks to the TV series “Moonlight Detective Agency”, so his face could not be called unknown.
And despite the fact that Bruce had never acted in action films before, he managed to perfectly perform the role of John McClane, seasoning it with a pinch of humor. For this, by the way, he received a rather large fee of $5 million, which even exceeded Arnold Schwarzenegger's fee for his role in the film "Predator". By the way, if you are interested in knowing how the film Predator was filmed, I recommend that you watch my video.
However, the creators decided to play it safe, so they didn't put Bruce Willis's face on the original film poster. Initially, only the building was on the poster, and only later Bruce Willis himself was added there.
2. At one point you can hear the phrase that John McClane could become a good bartender. This is a kind of reference, because before his film career, Bruce Wheelis actually worked as a bartender.
3. In the original, McClane fights German terrorists, but in the German version the terrorists were made British, changing their names from Hans to Jack, and from Karl to Charles.
4. Wheelis could not work in the morning and afternoon, since at that time he was filming the TV series “Moonlight Detective Agency”. Therefore, filming of "Die Hard" was carried out mainly in the evening and at night.
5. Alan Rickman constantly flinched with every shot, which was in no way consistent with the character of his character Hans Gruber. Therefore, Rickman's face was never shown in close-up during these moments.
6. The film "Die Hard" was a commercial success, grossing $138 million against a budget of just $28 million. Moreover, the film was nominated for an Oscar in four categories, although it failed to win a single statuette.
7. In the original book, the main character saves not his wife, but his daughter. For some reason, the creators decided to replace a relative. By the way, Bonnie Bedelia, who played McClane's wife, was recommended by Bruce Willis himself.
8. The role of Hans Gruber was essentially the first big film work for British actor Alan Rickman. Before that, he starred mainly in television films, TV series, and also participated in theatrical productions. And it was this role that opened the way for him to big cinema.
9. Gruber's death was filmed against a green screen. The actor hung at a height of 6 meters and had to land on a special pillow. The director told the actor that his hands would be released on the count of three, but he cheated, since the actor's hand was released on the count of TWO, thanks to which he achieved the most natural reaction of falling.
10. Alan Rickman and Bruce Willis were injured during filming. During the filming of one of the scenes, Rickman had a bad fall, which forced him to walk with the help of a crutch for several weeks.
But Bruce Willis forgot to wear earplugs during the filming of the shooting scene from under the table, which is why he became deaf in his left ear.
11. The original title of the film is "Die Hard", which is essentially an expression that means "unbending" or "stubborn". This turned out to be too difficult for the localizers, so the film was translated in different ways in different countries. So, for example, in Finland the film is listed as “Over My Corpse”, in Poland - “The Glass Trap”, in Norway - “Combat Skyscraper”, and in Germany - “Die Slowly”.
