How beekeepers find hornet nests (7 photos)

If you see a hornet with a ribbon on its body, then most likely it and its entire family will soon be destroyed.

Beekeepers will track down the bug, locate the hive and destroy the swarm. But why so cruel? And why do you need tape for this?

Imagine, you are a respectable beekeeper, you have many hives, many bee families that work tirelessly: collecting nectar, making honey, pollinating everything in the area. The whole idyll is spoiled by hornets. It would be nice if they just stole honey, no, give them more sophisticated treats - they kill the bees themselves and steal the brood!

A jar filled with hate.

The Asian giant hornet is especially strange. Not only because he is one of the largest among his predatory brothers, but also because they managed to place him in those regions where no one can say a word against him. The species of bees native to it are accustomed to attacks from arthropod gopniks and have developed a strategy. When the bandit flies up to the hive, the whole crowd of bees rush to hug him. The embrace is so hot that the uninvited guest dies from overheating. In a dense cocoon of bees, the temperature rises above 46 degrees, which is fatal for the Asian hornet.

But other honey bees don’t know this joke! Meanwhile, the Asian giant hornet even flew overseas - to America! Native bee species don't have the tools to fight off the invasive invader. A striped criminal, armed with a swarm of relatives, can destroy an entire apiary in one or two minutes. Therefore, there is only one way out - human help!

Here we must remember: catching one hornet is not a way out of the situation. This criminal person is also a social insect and has his own hive where he hides larvae. For them, in fact, they have to be predatory - because they feed mainly on protein foods of animal origin. Therefore, a person who wants to save his bee colonies must find someone else's house and destroy it along with the queen.

No, this is not the making of a science fiction film. This is how a hornet nest is destroyed. You can safely attack the hive only in such suits.

But tracking down an insect, even if it is quite large, is quite a challenge. The hornet is fast, agile and easily gets lost among bushes and trees - it is very difficult to keep it within sight. If we don’t see it, then we need to make it visible! To do this, beekeepers catch the hornet with bait: they put a free piece of meat, the smell of which is sure to attract attention, and wait. And then, depending on your imagination, the development of events will differ.

Hornets take small pieces directly with them, without chewing. People tie a cotton wool to the meat, and the striped predator becomes much more noticeable with it. If the idea with meat seems unreliable and complicated, then they will try to do it differently - hang it on the hornet itself or hang a colored light thread that will be noticeable. Or a polyethylene flag also perfectly unmasks the bug. Some even hook up a radio transmitter to find exact coordinates. And voila, the nest was found and then destroyed!
