Stills from the filming and interesting facts about the film "Batman", directed by Tim Burton. Starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

The producers called Robin Williams to play the Joker while Jack Nicholson was in second thoughts. Williams agreed, and the producers told Nicholson that if he did not agree immediately, the role would go to Williams. As a result, Nicholson agreed, and Williams was released. Williams took umbrage at being used as bait and not only refused to play the Riddler in Batman Forever, but any Warner Bros. projects at all. until the studio apologizes.

Michael Keaton, a self-described "logic freak", was concerned that Batman's real-life identity would be easy to solve and discussed ideas with Burton to make the character more confusing. Keaton eventually decided to voice Batman in a lower register than when he portrayed Bruce Wayne. The same technique was used in subsequent film portrayals of Batman.

Keaton heard almost nothing while in the Batman costume. According to him, claustrophobia helped him tune in to the role of Batman. "It made me withdraw into myself, which is exactly how I wanted the character to be - withdrawn," he said.

In the film, the Joker has to disguise his white face by painting it flesh-colored. The script stipulated that the Joker would remove his flesh-colored makeup to reveal white skin underneath, meaning the makeup team had to find a way to remove one layer of makeup while leaving another intact. As a result, they painted Jack Nicholson with white PAX paint and then applied a thin layer of food-grade silicone oil to which nothing sticks. After that, they took flesh-colored greasy paint and carefully painted it over so that it literally lay on top of the oil. Then they airbrushed and darkened the paint to make it look natural. By soaking a handkerchief in isopropyl alcohol, Nicholson could wipe his face, which would remove the greasy paint but leave the white paint untouched.

After seeing the original life-size model of the Batmobile, Tim Burton turned to the production designer and said, "Great. Where's the door?" The designers suddenly realized that the design lacked doors and, taking inspiration from the Harrier jump fighter cockpit, came up with a sliding cockpit.

Discussing the central theme, Burton said, "The whole movie and the mythology of the character is a duel of freaks. It's a fight between two people with disorders," adding that "The Joker is such a great character because he has complete freedom. Any hero , who operates outside of society and is considered a freak and an outcast, has the freedom to do what he wants. This is the dark side of freedom. Madness is in some terrible sense the greatest freedom you can have, because you are not bound by the laws of society."

At the beginning of the film, Knox enters the press room, where he is handed a cartoon sketch of "Batman" - a bat in a striped suit. It is signed by Bob Kane, one of the creators of the Batman comics.

The Batmobile was based on a Chevy Impala, incorporating an Impala engine, Ferrari taillights, London bus fuel caps, and Harrier Jump Jet engine parts. And also headlights from Honda Civic.

Kim Basinger was chosen in absentia for the role of Vicki Vale, but at first her agents did not allow producer Jon Peters to meet with her, and then it turned out that she was busy. So Shauna Young was cast as Vicky. But then Young broke her collarbone and was forced to withdraw from the film. A week before filming began, Basinger received a call and accepted the role.

When creating the main character's costume, Burton decided not to use leotards, spandex, or swim trunks (as they did in the comic), believing that it would not look intimidating.

Jack Nicholson, being an art connoisseur, admitted that the destruction of priceless works of art was the only scene that caused him concern. That is why the Joker does not allow his henchman to destroy Francis Bacon's painting "Figures with Meat."

The confirmation of Michael Keaton to play Bruce Wayne (Batman) caused outrage among comic book fans: the Warner Bros. office. 50,000 letters of protest were sent.

Burton praised composer Danny Elfman for "getting the right mix of light and dark" in his music.

To prepare for the role, Michael Keaton did research on Bats, studied Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, and lived alone in London before filming began.

Michael Keaton said that he was very nervous and embarrassed to work with Jack Nicholson, because he has incredible artistic power. It ended up being great because Nicholson made everyone feel very relaxed.

Before signing the contract, Jack Nicholson wanted to see makeup sketches for his character. The make-up artist created six sketches, two of which were selected by Tim Burton and sent to Nicholson. Having approved one of them, Nicholson signed the contract.

In an interview, Christopher Nolan (director of the Dark Knight trilogy) called this film "brilliant, visionary and extraordinarily idiosyncratic."

The authors drew inspiration for what the Joker's face should look like from the 1928 silent film "The Man Who Laughs" (based on the novel by Victor Hugo). The main character of the novel was, while still a boy, deliberately mutilated by human traffickers who turned children into monsters for the amusement of the public.

Tim Burton, being a fan of Michael Gough's work in various horror films, invited him to play Alfred Pennyworth.

The Batmobile was six meters long and weighed one and a half tons. Two prototypes were built for filming. The flames coming out of the back were created using paraffin.

Jack Nicholson made a habit of signing his Joker gloves and giving them out as gifts to set visitors, much to the chagrin of costume designer Bob Ringwood. Ringwood asked Nicholson to stop handing out gloves, but he continued to do so. New gloves were continually released throughout filming, and Ringwood estimates that the number of Joker gloves signed by Nicholson was in the hundreds.

During the search for a lead actor, Tim Burton met with many candidates who fit the traditional "square-jawed" and heroic image, but in the end the director realized that "there's a reason a guy dresses like a bat—he's trying to create a menacing presence." personality." Michael Keaton has wild eyes, but physically he is a man who needs a suit to make him look scarier.

Early drafts of the script featured Batman's sidekick, Robin. At one time, this role was offered to Kiefer Sutherland. But the actor refused, saying that he couldn't imagine himself in a yellow tights on the big screen - he didn't understand that Tim Burton planned to make the film much darker than the 1966 Batman series.

Michael Keaton had seven stunt doubles, including a world-class martial artist and a dancer who folded Batman's cape in a special way behind his back. The actor joked that, to his horror, all the stunt doubles were taller than him.

Part of what attracted Tim Burton to make a Batman film was that he identified with many of the hero's traits, including multiple personalities, a desire to remain invisible, and problems with relationships and communication.

The director admitted that he doesn’t even remember conversations about alternatives for the role of the Joker, since Jack Nicholson was “simply perfect. He is the Joker.” He adds that the only real concern was that perhaps Nicholson was too perfect for the role. "You want to make him the Joker but keep him Jack."

When creating the look of Gotham, the authors leaned more towards timeless and alternative designs rather than futuristic ones.

"Batman" grossed $411 million (of which $251 million at home) against a budget of $35 million. Moreover, the film received an Oscar in the category "Best Scenery."
