Why do many people love the True Crime genre so much (5 photos)
Lately, you can often hear that people really like to watch videos about the investigation of a particular crime, with real footage from crime scenes and interrogations. Paradoxically, this even calms many people down, which, at first glance, seems illogical.
Every day the number of those who are interested in stories about psychopaths, maniacs and kidnappings is only growing. Psychologists and psychotherapists argue that this interest arose from the most ancient times and that in this way our great-great-great-great-grandmothers tried to prepare themselves to meet the danger that awaited them everywhere. And now we have much more opportunities for this.
Scientists from the University of Illinois conducted research and found that women are noticeably more interested in True Crime than men. With particular fascination they watch stories that detail the crime itself, the salvation (if any) of the victims and the motives for the act committed.
Since women are many times more likely to feel in danger, they unconsciously perceive True Crime as instructions on how to act in a dangerous situation. And those girls who have suffered from violence receive something like a therapeutic effect: often they subconsciously believe that this happened only to them and crime analysis videos tell them that they are not alone in their trouble and that they are not to blame for it that this happened.
Safe adrenaline
Experiencing difficult (and even unbearable) events, if a person does not come into contact with it personally, forces the body to produce dopamine and adrenaline. Some investigations have about the same effect on the viewer as a parachute jump, snowboarding or other extreme sports. Yes, you can become a so-called “adrenaline junkie,” but getting addicted to True Crime literature or videos is still safer than the risk of breaking your limbs or dying on Everest.
A legal and safe way to tickle your nerves, to get a dose of fear, which, as you know, is the most powerful of emotions.
Aggression control
People in cities are often stressed from the endless race “home-work-hobbies-children”. This is where aggression comes from, and those closest to you can suffer from it - family, friends and even colleagues. Not to mention household and work productivity. Some people “have a blast” in the gym, some need to scrub their house until it’s sterile, and some need to watch a video/read a book in the True Crime genre.
Surprisingly, bloody real stories help to relax and reduce the level of aggression.
