The worst films of the year that turned out to be box office hits (10 photos)
Yesterday we did a post about Oscar-winning films that unfairly failed at the box office and did not make a profit. Today the topic will be exactly the opposite. We will talk about films that were loudly criticized by both ordinary viewers and critics. Not even without the "Golden Raspberries". However, all these troubles did not affect the money in any way. Moreover, the films became real box office hits. Let's find out who these lucky guys are.
And let us REMIND you again. Neither devastating reviews from critics, nor low ratings and negative comments from ordinary viewers, nor anti-awards mean that the film has no right to exist. All of these films have a huge fan base of loyal fans, and you may be among them.
For example, the film "Wild Wild West", which in fact turned out to be extremely unsuccessful, is fondly remembered by many viewers who were satisfied with everything. Therefore, if a movie brings joy to at least a couple of viewers, then it was not made in vain.
10th place - “Fantastic Four” (2015)
Box office: $167.9 million
A superhero reboot that managed to become even worse than the rather disastrous version from the mid-2000s.
9th place - “Cocktail” (1988)
Box office: $171.5 million
This film was rated well, but in its homeland the melodrama with a young Tom Cruise was torn to pieces.
8th place - “The Emoji Movie” (2017)
Box office: $217.7 million
Probably the most unsuccessful project in the history of animation. And already at the level of the idea itself.
7th place - “Wild Wild West” (1999)
Box office: $222 million
Will Smith apologized for two things: slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars and the movie Wild Wild West. The actor called this fantasy western the worst film of his career.
6th place - “Indecent Proposal” (1993)
Box office: $266.6 million
Another film that is highly valued here (the highest average rating in this top), and the right company has gathered: Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson. In addition, few could collect more than 250 million at the box office in 1993. But despite the popularity of this melodrama, critics tore it apart.
5th place - “Rambo: First Blood 2” (1985)
Box office: $300 million
The organizers of Golden Raspberry are very fond of dumping films with Stallone, although this particular sequel was, of course, worse than the original, but hardly worse than all the films of that year (and this is definitely not the worst Rambo; then the series went completely downhill). By the way, in the same year, the sequel to Sly’s other project, “Rocky 4,” was released, which received 7 “raspberry” nominations. As a result, these two films took most of the anti-awards of that ceremony.
BUT! “Rocky 4” also collected about $300 million at the box office, so Sylvester himself was definitely not interested in any “golden raspberries” at that time, since he was swimming in money.
4th place - “The Last Airbender” (2010)
Box office: $319.7 million
Many fans were waiting for the film, which was based on the super-popular and super-successful animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. The project predictably failed to meet the masterpiece standard of the original and was drowned in negative reviews and “golden raspberries.” The film did well at the box office, but the creators still hoped for much better results, which were not achieved due to disapproving word of mouth.
3rd place - “Fifty Shades of Gray” (2015)
Box office: $569.6 million
A famous film from which no one seemed to expect any accomplishments, but which many saw. Some people went to the session purely “for fun”, to make sure that it would actually show what was stated. An excellent candidate to become someone's giltipleje.
2nd place - “Twilight. Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (2012)
Box office: $829.7 million
The final part of the famous film saga, which by 2012 had gained many fans around the world, collected almost a billion dollars. But the organizers of “Golden Raspberry” have long been looking closely at the franchise and gave the final “Twilight” all possible anti-prizes, as if for the entire series.
1st place - “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (2009)
Box office: $836.3 million
And here he is the winner! The highest-grossing "worst film of the year." Of course it had to be Transformers. This entire series is still being published under the motto: “No one is interested in the quality of the drama, but the box office will be collected.” In fairness, it should be noted that “Revenge of the Fallen” looks like a pretty good film compared to subsequent sequels.
