Tunnels are places where there is always room for mystery. It seems that their cold, stagnant air fills its visitors to the brim with a gloomy charm, evoking thoughts of the terrible secrets kept by the chipped stonework of the walls, floor and ceiling.

Entrance to the Screaming Tunnel from Warner Road

In addition, it is difficult to find a more suitable place to search for paranormal phenomena than a secluded tunnel through which a dirty stream flows, whispering something in a language unknown to us.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, this article will talk about the well-known tunnel, which originates from the dead-end Canadian street Warner Road. If you look at the map, you can see that it is located less than 10 kilometers northwest of Niagara Falls.

By the way, you can even look at it from the inside (link to Google Maps). From the outside, it appears to be a simple tunnel built under the railroad tracks, serving as a channel for an unnamed stream and as a crossing for the occasional pedestrian wishing to cross the railroad safely.

But in fact, this tunnel contains a terrible secret that local residents are afraid to even talk about. This is exactly what I am going to tell you about.

Scream in the night

It is worth saying right away that not everyone believes in the veracity of this story, since there are not as many reliable sources about it as we would like. For these reasons, many people mistake it for an urban legend. One way or another, here she is...

On a summer evening in 1922, 19-year-old Orchard Park resident Anna Green was returning from her job in the village of Queenston. That day she was delayed and, wanting to take a shortcut, walked along Warner Road and turned into an underground tunnel.

Approximate route that Anna Green could have taken

A little more than 20 years have passed since its construction (in 1900), but even then there were eerie rumors about it. For example, some women claimed that they constantly heard crying and the grinding of metal on stone.

Anna was not a timid girl, so she often walked this road. After all, her journey was not 13 kilometers, but only 9. She usually covered this distance in 2 hours. Therefore, when after 3 hours the girl still did not come home, her mother began to worry.

By morning it became clear that something had happened to Anna, so the girl’s stepfather and brothers went to look for her. First of all, they decided to check the shortest path through the tunnel.

"Screaming Tunnel"

As they approached it in the pre-dawn twilight, they heard a plaintive cry coming from there. The men rushed towards the voice, but as soon as they ran into the tunnel, they were hit by a wave of icy air, which made them feel cold inside, and the fire in the lamp went out.

No matter how hard they tried to light the lamp, nothing worked. There was absolute darkness in the tunnel, and nothing was visible. Even the rays of the sun that peeked out seemed unable to penetrate the darkness that obscured the entrance to the tunnel. The men had to go by touch. About halfway along the way they found her. Anna Greene appeared to have been dead for several hours.

The subsequent investigation was unable to establish the cause of the girl’s death, because no injuries or marks were found on her. Therefore, the tragedy was recognized as an accident and they did not look for the culprit.

True, some of the residents of Orchard Park suspected Anna's stepfather of murder. Her biological father died when the girl was 5 years old. There were rumors that the stepfather was not indifferent to his stepdaughter, but she rejected his hints and advances. Considering that he worked on the railroad and knew the area well, it could very well be him.

The only witness, who passed through the tunnel about 15 minutes before Anna, said that, already approaching the exit, he heard some kind of scream behind. According to him, it did not sound like a human voice, so the man thought it was an animal and moved on.

After some time, local residents began to notice that strange things were happening in this tunnel. For example, if you light a match and wait a few seconds, it will be extinguished by a gust of cold wind, and then a terrifying scream will be heard, similar to a death rattle...

100 years have passed since then, but no one has been able to find out what happened to Anna Green. What was that scream? Was she killed in some clever way? Was she so scared that she had a heart attack? Or is there really something paranormal involved in this death?

History of the tunnel

The tunnel was originally built as a drainage for water and stream flowing from the railway tracks. To make it more convenient, and even a truck could drive over it, it was built 4.9 meters high.

Girl next to the Screaming Tunnel

As I already wrote, the tunnel was built in 1900. Its length is about 38 meters. In all other respects, this is exactly the same tunnel as dozens of others scattered throughout Canada. If it weren’t for this story with the murder and the fire constantly dying out in it, the tunnel would hardly have aroused anyone’s interest.

It is not difficult to guess that later stories about ghosts, strange sensations and inexplicable phenomena that occur every time someone dares to go through the tunnel began to be added to the story.

“I heard loud screams there and felt the presence of something cold that enveloped me like a cold wind, slowly penetrating under my skin,” wrote one of the social network users after visiting the tunnel. - Every time I lit a match, it immediately went out... After that, a sleepy sigh was heard, which sounded like a wheeze.

Who puts out the match?

This story is quite popular in the West, as it has been replicated for many years not only in Canada, but also in other countries. Many of those who have heard about this tunnel, of course, wonder: what causes the match to go out?

Most likely, this is due to atypical wind flows found only in this tunnel. Since, according to eyewitnesses, matches do not go out in other similar tunnels.

Still from the movie "The Dead Zone" (1983)

As for screams... it could be the wind, the noise of a train, or the echo of Niagara Falls reverberating across the area. We cannot exclude the power of imagination, which can even mistake the hoot of an owl for a woman’s cry.

By the way, the popularity of the “Screaming Tunnel” is so great that it appeared in several famous films. Scenes filmed there acquire a tinge of mystery and supernatural magnetism, which David Cronenberg took advantage of very successfully when he filmed several scenes there for the film “The Dead Zone,” whose script is based on the famous book of the same name by Stephen King.

And now a question for you, would you dare to visit this tunnel and light a match in it?
