Today we will dive into the wonderful and incredible world of the Darwin Award. Have you ever wondered what crazy and ridiculous situations can happen when people try to "defeat" nature or simply make the wrong decision in a normal situation?

We published the annual top Darwin Award nominees for last year, but as it turned out, there were so many nominees that we decided to release the second part for the past 2023.

The girl froze herself to death in a cryochamber.

Freezing, or cryotherapy, is used not only to restore damaged tissue, but also in cosmetology, where women turn to this method in the fight against signs of skin aging. With the use of liquid nitrogen in cryochambers, the temperature instantly reaches extremely low values, ranging from -130 to -150°C. And although it may seem that it is not worth venturing into such cold unnecessarily, 24-year-old Chelsea Eick, who worked in a beauty salon, for some reason decided to spend more than ten hours in a cryogenic chamber. Her frozen body was discovered inside, raising questions about how she got there. The sad outcome of this situation showed that even a short stay in a cryochamber can have tragic consequences.



Man dies while riding shopping cart

Let's be honest - we've all done crazy things and had fun at one time or another, but riding a cart down a hill at 50 mph probably wouldn't have crossed the minds of many of us. It was this risky activity that led to the tragic death of a man in Australia. Returning home with a friend, he discovered an abandoned shopping cart. One of them cheerfully decided to get into it, and the second clung to it and together they set off down the hill. Reaching an astonishing speed of 80 km/h, they were unable to avoid a collision with a car. One of the friends died on the spot, the second was hospitalized with serious injuries.



An American launched fireworks from his own head

The tragedy occurred in Maine, USA, where residents are generally sensible about drinking. Fireworks are also popular there, especially on the 4th of July when the entire country is filled with a light show. When drunk people are added to the mix, the situation can become extremely dangerous. This lesson was felt by those close to 22-year-old Devon Staples.

On the Fourth of July, a guy who was under the influence of alcohol decided to demonstrate his “skills” in front of his friends. He placed the mortar on his head and began waving the lighter, pretending to light the fuse. It is unclear whether this was a deliberate act or just a bad joke, but the result was tragic - it was the act of a person who did not think through the consequences.



A Japanese man was killed by an ordinary umbrella

It seems that umbrellas aren't just meant to keep out the rain - in Japan, they can become tools for a terrible crime. A man died as a result of a drunken quarrel with a friend when he accidentally poked him in the eye with an umbrella. The sharp tip of the umbrella pierced the eye and reached the victim's brain. The victim did not die immediately - she was in a coma for a long time. The friend was initially charged with assault, but after the victim's death the charge was changed to manslaughter causing grievous bodily harm resulting in death.



A tourist on a hike was killed by lightning that struck a selfie stick

Believe it or not, this ranking could have been compiled solely from deaths resulting from selfies. Yes, you heard that right, selfie. One of the unfortunate people who paid for his vanity was a man from Wales who set out to conquer a mountain range and was killed by lightning when lightning struck the stick he was holding for a selfie. What he was thinking when he went hiking in a thunderstorm with a long metal object that simply attracted lightning is unclear. It’s unlikely that a couple of colorful pictures with the mountains in the background were worth it.



A camel trampled two people

Death due to camel attack is something you don't hear about every day. It is unlikely that anyone would recognize camels as dangerous, but, on the other hand, not many came into close contact with these animals. At a camel farm in Texas, an aggressive camel attacked the farm owner and his girlfriend. When a friend entered the pen to give the camels fresh water, she was attacked. The farm owner rushed to help, and the camel trampled them both.



A stowaway fell from a plane and died

Some people show courage in their actions, which earns respect. However, there are those who, while doing brave things, not only do not deserve respect, but also look terribly stupid. This case is exactly that. The stowaway from Johannesburg hid in the underbelly of the plane, presumably in the luggage compartment or behind the landing gear, and flew more than 13,000 kilometers. Only upon arrival in London did he fall and fall onto the roof of an office building.

The waters of Hawaii are so beautiful that they beckon with their depths. And the captain of the fishing boat could not resist and decided to try his luck. But instead of a successful catch, he met a swordfish circling around like the queen of the sea kingdom. Instead of leaving her alone, he took the harpoon and attacked.

The swordfish didn't like this and decided to take revenge. With a meter-long pointed snout, she attacked the captain, piercing his chest. The man was urgently hospitalized, but all the doctors’ efforts were in vain.

Deaths resulting from such incidents have become so numerous that they certainly deserve at least one of these stories to top the list. 19-year-old Deleon Alonzo Smith from Texas accidentally shot himself in the head while trying to take a selfie with a gun. His action clearly did not confer the criminal status that he may have wanted to demonstrate to his friends.
