Running on water: an amazing creature of God racing along the surface of reservoirs (8 photos + 1 video)
The Savior was not the only one who had the ability to walk on water. There is a much simpler and more primitive creature in nature that successfully performs such promenades
These funny helmet-headed representatives in some countries are deservedly nicknamed Jesus lizards. Which is fair, because basilisks are really capable of running across the surface of the water and not drowning.
Basiliscus basiliscus is the scientific name for these creatures that live in the tropics of South and Central America. According to the most conservative estimates, they acquired their superpower about 48 million years ago. This is exactly how old the skull of the early “Jesus lizard” was found in the Eocene rocks of the American state of Wyoming several years ago.
Basilisk
Despite the grace of their form, basilisks can reach a length of almost a meter. But this is taking into account the tail. These unusual creatures received their name due to their expressive crest, which gives the reptiles a resemblance to a mythical creature.
Lizards settle in swampy areas, where it is easier to find food and shelter. Basilisks have good night vision, which allows them to hunt for insects at night and hide from predators.
Jogging mechanism
In a word, they are ordinary lizards, of which there are many. If it weren't for their ability to run on water. The speed is one and a half meters per second, and contact with the surface lasts only 0.068 seconds. This evolutionary advantage ensured the survival of the species. After all, land enemies remain on the shore and cannot do anything, following the fleet-footed prey with a hungry gaze.
Jesus lizards develop considerable speed to stay afloat, use their tail to maintain balance, and increase the contact area by opening the membranes between their toes.
By rushing through the water and hitting it with its paws, the lizard creates an impulse that provides forward push and lifting force. Moreover, the lower the weight, the higher it is. Therefore, babies can run further compared to adults.
But the main feature of basilisks, which does not allow the thickness of water to break through in the process, is the capture of an air bubble with the fingers of the hind legs, which minimizes contact with water. The basilisk removes its paw before the bubble collapses.
The maximum distance that a basilisk can run through water is 15-20 meters. But this is usually enough to avoid a meeting with a predator, leave him with his nose and save his life.
