Even now, archaeologists continue to make interesting discoveries, thanks to which we learn a lot about the past of the Earth and its inhabitants.

But sometimes finds turn out to be so unusual that they are not so easy to explain. Just some of them will be discussed in this article.

Kabayan mummies

We have all heard that in Ancient Egypt it was customary to mummify the bodies of the dead. But what you may not know is that this practice was also common in the Philippines.

The most curious thing is that the Filipinos' approach to mummification was completely different; they did not use bandages and traditional embalming methods that were used in Ancient Egypt.

In fact, their method may surprise you, because the ancient Filipinos mummified their dead using fire... One of the largest such burials was found at the end of the 20th century in a cave in the province of Kabayan, after which the mummies got their name.

These particular mummies, according to scientists, were made 500-700 years ago. As for the “technology” of this unusual mummification, its details are known only in general terms.

Researchers were able to find out that the mummification process began even before a person’s death, when the dying person drank a very salty drink. After death, the body was placed in a sitting position and exposed to smoke for several months.

Only after this was the mummy placed in a small pine coffin and taken to the cave. It is worth saying that this method of mummification is very effective and allows you to keep bodies in good condition for quite a long time.

Dragon egg?

Very often, attempts are made to connect artifacts that look mysterious with aliens, ancient civilizations, or cryptids. To be honest, sometimes I myself am too zealous in the search for secrets and wishful thinking. But perhaps not in this case.

In 2020, an Arkansas resident was digging a hole for a swimming pool and found a mysterious object in the ground that had a flattened, egg-shaped shape. He hastened to publish his photographs on his page on the social network, thereby causing quite a stir.

Supporters of the existence of cryptids did not even doubt that in front of them was nothing more than a dragon egg, which was slightly flattened under the pressure of the earth. It is worth admitting that this strange thing, a little more than half a meter long, really looks like an egg or a fossilized monster.

Although there were those who argued that there was nothing mysterious about the find, calling it an ordinary geological formation. Either wanting to hide the truth, or for some other reason, the man refused further comments and did not provide this object for analysis. Therefore, we can only guess what is inside the “egg”.

"Ancient Telephone"

Sometimes, inside tombs and in burial places, archaeologists manage to find very interesting artifacts that resemble modern things. This is what happened with the discovery of a woman from the ancient Xiongnu empire.

In 2016, a group of our archaeologists under the leadership of Pavel Leus carried out excavations in the Ala-Tey necropolis, located at the bottom of the giant Sayano-Shushenskoye reservoir, better known as the Sayan Sea (the burial ground is freed from water in the spring for 2 months of the year: May and June).

Perhaps the most interesting find (at least for now) was this unusual object, which was buried with a woman more than 2,100 years ago.

Does this mysterious thing remind you of a device that we use all the time? Yes, I mean mobile phone. Archaeologists even jokingly called this item “iPhone” and its owner “Natasha.”

This mysterious object, with its dimensions and weight, really resembles a mobile phone. Its width is 9 cm, length - 18 cm, and thickness - 1 cm. And it is made of jet - a relatively durable type of coal.

It is curious that the plate was inlaid with small stones of mother-of-pearl, carnelian and turquoise. So what is this item? And how was it used?

If you look closely at the photo above, you will notice that Chinese coins were found next to this rectangular object (this is not surprising, since the ancient nomadic Xiongnu people actively traded with China).

Since the coins are located around the waist, they were most likely attached to a belt, and the jet object could have been a buckle.

“This place is a scientific sensation,” said Marina Kilunovskaya from the Institute of Material History of Culture, who supervised the Tuvan archaeological expedition. “We were incredibly lucky that we found the burials of nomads that were not disturbed by grave robbers.

It is worth adding that the constantly changing water level of the Sayan Sea, which stretches across the territory of the Republic of Tyva and the Krasnoyarsk Territory, creates a serious threat to such unique burial grounds as Ala-Tey and Terezin Xiongnu. Just imagine how many more interesting and valuable finds could be hidden there...
