12 of the most disastrous Disney projects in recent years (13 photos)
The Disney company was founded a hundred years ago (October 16, 1923) and became the most popular children's animation company, which immediately became classics. But in our time, the films she has shot and the cartoons she has created are not always so successful and often receive negative reviews from critics and viewers.
We decided to remember which Disney projects over the past four years failed so much at the box office that they brought losses to the company. Let's not hide the fact that some of them still received positive reviews, despite the box office collapse.
Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fate (2023)
Budget: 295 million
Box office: 384 million
The film was very expensive (the most expensive in the entire franchise), but its fees did not cover the costs. It had to earn at least another 600 million in order not to be considered a failure.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Budget: 100 million
Box office: 130 million
This Oscar nominee, which lost at least $120 million, had bad luck at the box office, but gained popularity on streaming services, earning good ratings.
The Haunted Mansion (2023)
Budget: 150 million
Box office: 117 million
The comedy horror film was not saved even by a good cast, which included Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto. The film did not even collect the full cost of its costs.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Budget: 200 million
Box office: 220 million
Not only box office receipts, but also overall ratings indicate the film's failure.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Budget: 297 million
Box office: 569 million
Compared to previous films, this one looks more successful, but still the financial director described the box office receipts, which did not reach at least two budgets: “Not a huge disappointment, but, nevertheless, a disappointment.”
Strange World (2022)
Budget: 180 million
Box office: 73.6 million
Buzz Lightyear (2022)
Budget: 200 million
Box office: 226 million
The story of the legendary Buzz Lightyear was so unsuccessful that the studio lost another 106 million.
Mulan (2020)
Budget: 200 million
Box office: 69.9 million
The studio suffered huge losses because of this remake, which, despite everything, was nominated for an Oscar for best costumes and special effects.
Elementary (2023)
Budget: 200 million
Box office: 495 million
The film initially collected incredibly small sums, but thanks to a long run in theaters and advertising, it was able to cross the $400 million mark (twice the budget), but still, in order to cover all expenses, Disney had to include income from streaming broadcasting, theme parks and consumer goods. Net profit did not help the film become a complete success.
I'm Blushing (2022)
Budget: 175 million
Box office: 20 million
Another example of a box office failure that did not affect the high ratings on streaming platforms, as well as the Oscar jury (nomination for best animated film).
Forward (2020)
Budget: 200 million
Box office: 141 million
The studio lost more than $130 million, but the cartoon was also nominated for an Oscar.
Dumbo (2019)
Budget: 170 million
Box office: 353 million
The film had to gross at least 500 million to recoup its costs.
