When choosing sweet peppers at the market or in a store, we usually call them Bulgarian, realizing that in most cases they grow in our country. Traditionally, it is found in the wild in Central America, from where it has spread throughout the world. It usually grows in subtropical and tropical climates, but those varieties that we know today have long been acclimatized to our latitudes.

So why did it become “Bulgarian”?

In addition, the pepper was not originally sweet at all. Sweet peppers do not exist in nature. The one that grows wild is always spicy. America became the birthplace of this pepper, and from there it spread throughout the world.

Breeders from Hungary decided to correct the situation in 1928. They announced that they had created a new variety of pepper, and now these are not small bitter pods, but thick-walled sweet fruits.

This is how the first sweet varieties of pepper appeared, which were loved by everyone. They began to use it in cooking, in pickling, and eaten fresh. Gradually, breeders from many countries around the world created their own varieties of sweet peppers. Including Bulgaria.

And the first sweet peppers turned out to be of Bulgarian origin. When Bulgaria came under the influence of the USSR in the 50s and 60s of the last century, products, including pepper, began to be supplied from there. To the question in the store “Where does the pepper come from?” The sellers answered simply - Bulgarian.

In addition, it was the Bulgarian breeders who achieved that sweet peppers received different colors - green, red, yellow. And their contribution to the development of new varieties of thick-walled sweet peppers is difficult to overestimate.

Moreover, bell peppers are called bell peppers only in some regions and in some countries of the former USSR. The vegetable received the name “bell pepper” already in Soviet times, when it was grown mainly in Bulgaria. The rest of the world, except for the CIS countries, will be perplexed if you call this pepper Bulgarian. Americans simply call this plant pepper, sometimes adding color - red pepper (red) or green pepper (green).

In Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand this plant is called capsicum. In Europe it’s no different than paprika.
