An ordinary island in Venice, located in a picturesque corner, was supposed to become a favorite vacation spot. But both locals and tourists do not come close to this lost piece of land.

The fact is that Italians sincerely believe in a curse hanging over the island, hidden in the quiet Venetian lagoon. Poveglia was inhabited a long time ago, back in the 5th century, but in the 14th century people left the island due to war. And since then, new attempts to populate the empty land have been unsuccessful: neither the descendants of the deported indigenous inhabitants, nor representatives of the secret monastic order could live here.

And the next forced migrants had no choice. It was decided to make Poveglia the last refuge for those suffering from the plague, when the terrible disease began a bloody harvest in Europe.

The Last Abode

People and even animals went here to find their last refuge. Gradually, the territory of the island turned into a giant cemetery, since in addition to the dying, bodies began to be brought here to avoid the spread of infection.

The corpses were burned and buried. The picturesque island bore an unexpected burden. The epidemic has subsided. But Poveglia acquired a new function: instead of a quarantine zone, in 1922 it was equipped with a psychiatric hospital, where opponents of the Mussolini regime were sent to.

According to fragmentary information from eyewitnesses, the treatment methods used were more reminiscent of the work of inquisitors. And at night, patients heard moans and screams, interrupted by someone’s ominous otherworldly whispers.

Some patients, who were not technically patients because they were locked up because of their political beliefs, reported seeing ghosts. Translucent figures burned in ghostly fire, opening their mouths in a silent scream, and fell into a pile of disappearing ash.

Oblivion and the search for truth

One of the first victims was the head physician of the hospital, at whose suggestion the cruel experiments were carried out. Either the man himself jumped from the bell tower in a fit of madness, or one of the patients helped him, but from then on the bell itself began to ring, frightening the residents.

In 1968, it was decided to remove the remaining people. The island became a closed protected area. But those who liked to tickle their nerves, secretly making their way into the territory, said that on the island they were seized by panic and a feeling of viscous horror. Some saw blurry silhouettes and heard screams.

A wealthy family wanted to acquire ownership of the main mansion of the island in order to have a kind of haunted house at their disposal. But the inspection ended in a hasty flight. The deal did not go through, and the couple’s daughter, according to rumors, had terrible scratches of unknown origin on her face.

Who rules the island of lost souls? The same souls that turned a corner of paradise into a center of anomalous forces and cannot find peace? Or is it all about impressionability and self-hypnosis? There are still no exact answers regarding the mystery of the beautiful abandoned island.
