Among the foreign comedies of the eighties and nineties, the film “Police Academy” especially stood out. I suggest you learn some interesting facts about the film and its sequels.

1. Actors such as Tom Hanks, Michael Keaton and even Bruce Willis were initially considered for the role of Mahone. But in the end, the role went to the little-known actor Steve Guttenberg. And it was this role that brought Steve popularity, because after “Police Academy” he starred in such films as “Three Men and a Baby”, “Short Circuit”, “Two: Me and My Shadow” and others.

2. As you know, scenes in movies are filmed out of order. And the film "Police Academy" was no exception. One of the first scenes to be filmed was the shaving of the heads of cadets Copeland and Blanks. And some of the scenes that preceded this event were filmed later, so the actors had to wear wigs, because their heads were already shaved, whereas according to the plot they should still have hair.

3. In its homeland in the USA, the first part of the film had a more or less good rating, but starting from the third part the film literally went downhill. The audience was already fed up with second-rate comedies.

4. The director invited little-known singer Marion Ramsey to play the role of cadet Laverne Hooks. To make the character more comical, the aspiring actress was given rubber pads to plump up her body and was also given a funny wig.

6. Bubba Smith played professional football, but over the course of his 11-year sports career, he earned far less than he did for his role as Hightower.

7. Michael Winslow, who played black Sergeant Larvel Jones in all parts of the film, actually imitates all the sounds that are shown in the film. After the success of the film, Winslow became a regular guest on various shows and even began performing his own program. On television he was nicknamed "The Man of 10,000 Sounds." By the way, it was he who voiced the Mogwai in the film "Gremlins".

Yes, and it’s worth noting that Michael Winslow became one of the few actors who appeared in absolutely all parts of the film “Police Academy” and even in the television series of the same name.

9. In 2015, the film “Lavalantula” was released, which told about fiery tarantulas that appeared after a volcanic eruption. But the point is not in the film itself, but in the fact that many actors from “Police Academy” starred in this film: Steve Guttenberg (Mahoney), Michael Winslow (Jones), Leslie Easterbrook (Calahan), Marion Ramsey (Hooks).

10. In 1997, a television series of the same name was released on television. True, only Michael Winslow remained from the original cast, and even then he did not appear in all episodes. True, other actors from the original series of films also visited the series.

11. Only the first part of the film has an adult rating of R (17+). Well, that’s understandable. But the subsequent films in the series were already softer. The second part received a rating of PG-13 (13+ years), and subsequent parts are completely PG (for children with parental permission).

12. Hightower was originally only going to be a cameo character. But during test previews, audiences were so impressed with the character that his role was expanded, making him one of the main characters.

13. In the original script, the last name of the character Switchak, played by Tim Kazurinsky, sounded like Shevchuk. But due to the fact that actor Bubba Smith could not pronounce this surname normally and without errors, it was changed to Switchak. But the store that Switchak owned in the second part of the film still bears the name “Shevchuk.”

14. In general, initially Switchak was supposed to appear only at the beginning of the film, but the creators liked how organically Zed and Switchak looked so much that they decided to increase the latter’s screen time.

Naturally, thanks to this incredible chemistry and the love of the audience, Zed and Switchak ended up in the third and fourth parts, but as cadets.

15. The character Leslie Barbara, played by Donovan Scott in the first part of the film, was supposed to appear in the second. But after learning that his character in the story would have to eat from a plate where the cat went, he decided to refuse this role.

The creators did not want to cut this scene from the film, so the character Vinnie Shtulman was introduced into the film, who did all this.

16. The Japanese Nagato, who appeared in the third part of the film, was originally supposed to be Indian. This explains why he sleeps on nails and meditates over a candle.

17. David Graf (Tackleberry), Michael Winslow (Jones) and George Gaines (Commander Lassard) appeared in all 7 parts of the series. Leslie Easterbrook was unable to appear in the second part due to her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter.

18. In the movie "Police Academy 3: Retraining", Blanks and Copeland are involved in sabotage, so they switch the signal every now and then to confuse Hooks. During one of these switches, the game "Papper boy" about a newspaper delivery man appears on the screen. You probably played it on the Dendy console.

19. Steve Guttenberg (Mahoney) decided that he had outgrown Police Academy, which is why he refused to participate in the filming of the fifth, sixth and seventh parts of the series. Also, Steve was offered to take part in the series, but even then he said a firm “no”.

According to the plot of the film, it was Mahone who was supposed to receive the rank of lieutenant. But since the character was absent from the film, this title went to Hightower.

True, 20 years later he admitted that he regrets his action. Moreover, when there were rumors about the filming of the eighth part, Steve immediately agreed to this role. But until now nothing is known about the fate of the film. Although, given the fact that it has now become fashionable to bring old franchises back to life, I would not be surprised if this film would still see the light of day. But filmmakers should hurry up, since the main cast of the film is already more than 65 years old, and the actors who played such characters as Tackleberry, Hightower and Lassard have already left our world completely (unfortunately).

20. Bobcat Goldthwait, who played Zed, did not take part in the filming of the fifth film, since the proposed fee did not meet the actor’s expectations. And due to the fact that Goldthwait did not take part in the filming, the creators decided that there was no point in bringing back Tim Kazurinsky (Switchak), because they fit perfectly into the film only as a duet.

Naturally, these are not all the facts about the cult film series “Police Academy”.
