Some animals chase others, and they, in turn, escape and try to hide using completely different methods. Someone pretends to be a plant, and someone even has the skill to imitate death.

These animals, when simulating death, look completely lifeless, and some may even begin to smell like decaying flesh. Interestingly, this method can be used not only for protection, but also to lure prey.

Ducks

There are some species of ducks that pretend to be dead when there is no escape from danger. This is called tonic immobility. They stretch their necks, open their eyes and press their wings to their body. There is just one nuance: in the case of a duck, its “playing dead man” does not work. Predators can still find it and eat it.

Eastern broad-nosed snake

This type of snake is the real king of drama. When they are in danger, they roll over onto their backs, begin to writhe, and then pretend that they are dead. Thus, they show signs of severe poisoning or illness. They can even release a stream of very smelly liquid from the body. Predators, of course, will not eat suspicious prey and will go looking for someone who does not look like he is dying from a terrible disease.

Opossum

Opossums are quite peace-loving guys and will not get into trouble until the last moment. But if danger is inevitable, then they begin to play dead.

When faced with a predator, the possum simply faints at the mere thought of conflict. The comatose state can last from a few minutes to as much as four hours. Drooling flows from the marsupial's mouth, the body becomes completely limp, and over time the animal's carcass even begins to become covered with something like rigor mortis. Well, the smell of decomposition is the icing on the cake, which finally scares away predators.

Mantis (Gyromantis kraussii)

This type of mantis always tries to hide from its enemies so as not to end up as their dinner. But when it is impossible to escape, they have no other choice but to pretend to be dead. Moreover, he pretends so well that you can touch him, lift him, turn him over, and the mantis will simply lie absolutely motionless. The camouflage of dry leaves also helps, in which it is not easy for predators to find the praying mantis and they go in search of easier prey.

Sleeping bulls

Even the fish pretend to be dead. But they do this to lure prey and this is a whole new level of hunting. Moreover, these gobies are so lazy that they simply lie on the bottom and wait for small fish to swim. Scavengers willingly swim when they see something that looks like a dead fish and end up in the jaws of fast gobies.
