Busy and fussy, homely and economical. Fluffy and gluttonous. And, as they say, in difficult conditions he is prone to suicide due to impressionability and a delicate mental constitution.

Although, it would seem that chipmunks (and we are talking about them) are very positive creatures and have an optimistic view of this world. And he is also quite worthy of the title “The caretaker of the fauna world”, since he makes reserves for the winter that can be 20 times greater than the carcass weight of the most fussy fluffy.

In the middle of winter, the chipmunk loves to wake up and feast on treats - nuts, mushrooms, seeds and other provisions that the prudent animal stuffed into the side branches of its hole.

It is not known exactly at whose instigation, but rumors began to be actively cultivated among the people that the chipmunk, not finding supplies that were sweet to his soul and belly, was so upset that he voluntarily gave up his life. Literally - he climbs a bush or tree, sticks his neck into a crevice between the branches and... disappear, wild head.

Many saw it and told others about it. Even authoritative publications carefully considered this version, not to mention numerous experienced hunters, trackers, someone’s acquaintances and acquaintances who know and have seen it for sure.

Live, chipmunk

At a certain point, the discussion about the unfortunate chipmunks reached such intensity that volunteers were even called upon to go into the forest and scatter supplies so that the animals that had forgotten the location of the warehouses or had been plundered could live.

To avoid further disputes reaching the point of absurdity, professionals joined the process. Thus, Doctor of Biological Sciences Marat Migranov dispelled all rumors and doubts, saying that the reason for such cases could be simple greed:

Chipmunks hang, not from hunger, but because they stuff their cheek pouches with food. And sometimes, perhaps, when running away from predators, they may simply be careless, jumping from branch to branch, they can fall into a flyer, into a branch that forks. I personally observed this in the Shulgan-Tash nature reserve. I would say that chipmunks hang themselves not from hunger, but from greed.

The fact is that suicide in wildlife, even if it occurs in some cases, is in no way the norm, but a clear deviation. And we can’t talk about mass behavioral politics, because the instinct of self-preservation is a very powerful thing. Even in the case of chipmunks.

And the cause of isolated cases of detection of dead animals on branches can also be death from suffocation due to fussiness and mobility, death from hunger or attacks by predators. Some birds of prey leave their prey in reserve, forming “canned food” on branches for the near future.

With a high degree of probability, the reason for the story was an April Fool's joke that spread across the Internet. In addition, the animals live and winter in their burrow, in the branches of which supplies are stored. And the minke whale definitely knows its own home well.

Have you ever encountered similar examples of mass misconceptions that actually turned out to be a joke or fiction?
