Home is a cozy place where we want to return and where we feel safe. But sometimes you can find such horror in your own home that you want to move out and forget it forever. The heroes of this collection made strange, frightening and eerie discoveries in their homes - from snakes in the walls to the body of a missing spouse. All the characters are real, and at one time they made it into news releases and headlines.
1. The wife found the body of her missing husband in the house
In 2022, 53-year-old American Richard Madge from Illinois was reported missing. On April 26, 2022, Madge told his wife Jennifer that he was not feeling well and decided to leave work early. When the wife arrived home, her husband was nowhere to be found, but his car was parked, and his wallet and keys were in the house. The police searched twice, but the man was not found. Later, a terrible smell appeared in the house, but Jennifer Madge decided that it was all due to the sewer pipes. Only 8 months later, while sorting out the Christmas decorations in the closet, she discovered the body of her husband behind the clothes. An autopsy revealed that the man committed suicide by hanging.
2. Coyote in the toilet
Coyotes are predatory members of the canid family that can be found in the forests, steppes and deserts of North America. They usually avoid people, but are sometimes found in large cities. On September 9, 2022, residents of Trenton, Ohio, forgot to lock the front door of their home while they were putting things in their car. A coyote ran into their house - although they saw him later and by accident. After the father of the family used the toilet, he saw that an animal was hiding behind the toilet. It was the coyote who decided to choose such a strange place for refuge. A team of police officers then rescued and released the coyote into the wild.
3. Doll with a note
In 2021, 32-year-old Jonathan Lewis, a primary school teacher in the UK, bought a new house. Under the stairs, in a place sealed with drywall, he made an eerie discovery - a rag doll with a strange note. It said: "Dear New Landlord, Thank you for freeing me. My name is Emily. My owners lived in this house in 1961, but I didn't like them, so they had to leave. They partied and sang too often, I I got tired of it. I decided to kill them with a knife. I hope you have knives.. Good night." After this, the guy’s friends tried to persuade him to move out and sell the house, but he found this note not scary, but funny.
4. Naked stranger
35-year-old Christa Brown from the American city of Providence woke up from the arms of a naked stranger. The man snuck into the house while the door was open, went into the bedroom and hugged the woman. At first, Krista thought it was her boyfriend - but she thought it was strange because her boyfriend and son had recently gone down to the basement. When the woman turned around, she was shocked - in front of her was a naked, unfamiliar man. The woman began to scream, and the stranger disappeared and ran to the second floor, where Christa's brother was. The brother drove the strange character away and contacted the police. It turned out that this 50-year-old man lived in a neighboring house. When the police came in, he was sitting naked on the sofa. He was later sent for a psychiatric evaluation and charged with breaking and entering.
5. 700 acorns stored by woodpeckers
The ant woodpecker or acorn woodpecker is known for one interesting feature. They make a kind of "storehouse" by storing acorns and placing them in holes hollowed out in trees. One pair of these woodpeckers decided to store their acorns in an unusual place - in a residential building. In December 2022, homeowners in California complained of worms crawling out of the bedroom wall. Experts found that these were mealworms that fed on a whole supply of acorns of 317 kilograms. Acorn woodpeckers have made hundreds of holes in the wood siding of a house and dropped acorns through a hole in the chimney. Then they made their way into the attic and began leaving acorns in the walls of the house. The specialists spent the whole day cleaning this cache and sealing all the cavities where the woodpeckers put the acorns.
6. Serval
Servals are predatory representatives of the cat family, which are distributed throughout almost the entire territory of Africa. But sometimes they can wander where they shouldn’t. On June 30, 2021, a resident of Brookhaven, USA, named Christine Frank was resting in bed. Her husband went for a walk with the dog, and the woman was left alone in the bedroom. Suddenly she felt that someone was walking on the bed - and turning around, she saw a large cat nearby. It was a serval. The woman got scared and called her husband, who later drove the animal away. It turned out that this female serval had an owner who lived nearby. It is illegal to keep servals in the state of Atlanta, so the cat was taken from the owner. Now she is alive and well, and lives in a reserve.
7. Illegal resident
In March 2023, a resident of Mill Creek, USA, began to notice that things were missing from his home and the smell of cigarette smoke. During his search, he found a makeshift bed in the attic, half-eaten food, drug paraphernalia and a running heater. The owner of the house called the police, but only during the second search the illegal occupant was discovered in the house. It was 24-year-old Daniel Tomoyaga. He stole the homeowner's passport, wallet and $3,000 and was in possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl pills. The guy was later accused of theft, burglary and drug possession.
8. Car on the roof of the house
In March 2017, a resident of Jiangsu Province in China heard a very loud sound. It turned out that an SUV had crashed into the roof of his house. The driver wanted to go around a tricycle and avoid a collision with another car, when he suddenly pressed the gas pedal hard and drove into the roof of a house. The car was removed from the roof using a crane. Fortunately, neither the driver nor the owner of the house were injured.
9. Snakes in the walls
This frightening discovery was made by 42-year-old Amber Hall from Centennial, USA. At the end of March this year, a woman bought a long-awaited house, where she moved with her children and two dogs. While sorting things out in the garage, a woman noticed that her dog saw something strange. Coming closer, she saw two holes in the wall and snakes that were crawling up... But that was just the beginning. The woman called snake catchers, who found as many as ten snakes in the house and warned that there could be a snake den under the house. They determined the snakes were large and lived in the house for at least two years. The owner decided that until all the snakes were discovered and removed, she would not be able to live peacefully in the new house.
10. Former owner of the house in the basement
A resident of Cleveland Heights in the United States bought a house at a public auction. On November 29, 2022, he went to examine it and discovered a decomposing body in the basement. The man immediately called the police, and it later turned out that the body was 71-year-old Nina Fielden, the previous owner of the house. No injuries were found on Fielden's body, and no one ever knew how it got into the basement or why no one saw it before it was sold.
