Applying makeup is a difficult and tedious task, both for the makeup artist and for the actor, who has to sit without moving for several hours. But even they admit that all the pain is worth it when the process produces memorable characters like Jim Carrey's legendary Grinch or the creepy Vecna from the new season of Stranger Things.

1. 7-9 hours: Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, X-Men

The actress said that initially the process of applying makeup took 9 hours, but by the third film the makeup artists had already gotten the hang of it and reduced this time to seven hours. “I realized quite early on that this was my job. I was paid to participate in applying this makeup. I played for free,” Romijn joked in an interview.

2. 8-9 hours: Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, X-Men: First Class

In First Class, the filmmakers stayed true to Rebecca Romijn's makeup from the first films. But the makeup caused Jennifer Lawrence such severe skin irritation that a doctor had to be called to the set. For the film "X-Men: Days of Future Past" they had to replace the makeup with a tight suit. This also helped save the makeup artists a lot of time.

3. 8.5 hours: Jim Carrey as the Grinch, How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The makeup process took so long that the film's producer invited a CIA operative whose job it is to help people endure torture to come on set.

4. 8 hours: Halle Berry as Jocasta Ayres, Cloud Atlas

In addition to Jocasta Ayres, the actress played five other roles in the film: Louise Rey, an Aboriginal woman, Ovid, Meronym and an Indian woman at a party.

5. 8 hours: Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, “Vice”

6. 7-8 hours: John Hurt as John Merrick, "The Elephant Man"

The makeup for John Hurt was created using casts of the real John Merrick's body, which are located in the Royal London Hospital.

7. 7 o'clock: Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna, Stranger Things

Netflix has released a behind-the-scenes video so viewers can learn more about the hard work of the makeup artists:

8. 7 Hours: Michael Dorn as Worf, Star Trek: The Next Generation

9. 7 o'clock: Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, Deadpool

Another video capturing the entire process of applying makeup - with an unexpected ending!

10. 6 o'clock: Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, "Batman and Robin"

For some close-up shots, Arnold had to insert an LED into his mouth, and at one point it became quite dangerous: make-up artist Jeff Don explained that the actor's saliva penetrated and destroyed the battery, causing acid to enter his mouth.

11. 6 o'clock: Gary Oldman as Mason Verger, Hannibal

“I knew we could get away with more with [Oldman] than with any other actor. The first thing he said was, “Can we stretch my eye so that it is open?” This is terribly disgusting. I showed people pictures [of Oldman as Verger] and they all just said, 'Oh my God,' and walked away, which made me very happy," said makeup artist Greg Cannom.

12. 5-6 hours: Doug Bradley as Pinhead, Hellraiser

13. 5 o'clock: Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Greg Cannom (“Power,” “Hannibal”) also worked on this complex age makeup.

14. 5 o'clock: John Matuszak as Slot, "The Goonies"

In 2019, 34 years after the release of The Goonies, footage of Slott's makeup test was finally found.

15. 5 o'clock: Dave Bautista as Drax, Guardians of the Galaxy

As with Mystique, the makeup artists were able to significantly reduce the time required to apply Drax's makeup, but the multi-step process initially took 5 hours.

16. 5 o'clock: Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Guardians of the Galaxy

“One day I was picked up at three in the morning, and even my dog wasn’t happy about it. I had to sit for five hours for five months. It was crazy, but it paid off. The film turned out fantastic,” the actress shared in an interview.

17. 5 o'clock: Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, "The Fly"

In 1987, Chris Wallace and Stéphane Dupuis won the Oscar for Best Makeup for their work on the film.

18. 5 o'clock: Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

In one of his interviews, the actor told how one day his wife Maria brought their daughter to the set and she even burst into tears when she saw her dad “without half his face and with a burning eye.”

19. 5 o'clock: Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf, La Vie En Rose

According to Marion Cotillard, she was not embarrassed by the five-hour process of applying makeup, since she is a big fan of Edith Piaf and wanted to pay tribute to her.

20. 5 o'clock: Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness, "Legend"

“We had terrible negotiations about what parts of me would be visible. I fought and fought and begged to keep my own eyes... My eyes were completely covered by contact lenses, like the eyes of wolves or cats, which was very painful because, essentially, what they do is they take a mold of your eye and put it in your eye, and if you feel pain, they trim it a little until the eye stops hurting,” the actor shared.

21. 5 o'clock: John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, “Hairspray”

According to John Travolta, he didn’t even recognize himself in the test makeup, not to mention his friends and family, to whom he showed the test video.
