The world of cinema is magical and enchanting. But sometimes behind the scenes things happen that are so terrible in their reality that it’s even hard to believe in them.
What secrets are hidden on the other side of some successful and beloved projects?
"Roar"
The 1981 film featured a ton of wild animals: elephants, zebras, big cats and more. A lot of money, including physical money, was spent on filming. And this film turned out to be one of the riskiest from a safety standpoint.
Tippi Hedren and Noel Marshall visited Africa before starting work to get into the spirit and idea. The guys started buying pumas, jaguars, and leopards, without complying with the law. And when they were told to hand the animals over to safe hands so they could be released into their habitat or relocated to parks, they simply took the animals to a secret location closer to the filming location.
Instead of the planned few months, the process lasted for five (!) years. And during this time, many unpleasant oddities happened to the film crew. Part of the operator's scalp was removed. Tippy was hit in the face by the lioness, nearly depriving the woman of her eye. Noel developed gangrene after countless injuries. And their daughter Melanie Griffith had to undergo plastic surgery after an interaction with a lion that did not go according to plan. Dozens of other people were also injured. The film was a box office failure, but no animals were harmed during filming.
Kimberley's story
Kimberly Kramer made every effort to build a film career in the 80s. The girl more or less succeeded. But when she turned 30, she was faced with the problem of a lack of new roles: age, type and all that.
And the woman couldn’t think of anything better than to introduce herself as another person - the girl Riley Weston, who was barely 18. And they believed her. True, she did not risk appearing on camera, fearing that she might be recognized. But Kramer worked quite successfully as a screenwriter. As a result, the deception was revealed, and everyone attacked the woman with accusations of lying. But some prominent film figures stood up for the false Weston, admiring her clever plan.
"Divine Delight"
It was planned to use the small Irish village of Ballycotton as the filming location for this film. Marlon Brando became interested in the project. Then Johnny Depp joined him. A good team was assembled, but it was faced with a financing problem: investors did not see good returns in the future.
Everyone was inspired by a certain company CineFin, which promised to invest $300 million in the project. Everyone set to work with enthusiasm. Many local residents were also involved in the process. But when one of the agents in Los Angeles went to the sponsor's office to get money, he found only a regular parking lot on site.
The company has disappeared. No one except Brando received the money. And from that moment on, the town of Ballycotton became synonymous with disappointment and frustration. Here, not only did they deceive famous actors, but they also left a lot of inspired people with empty pockets, who happily took on the job and received nothing for it.
One-two-three scenario
The film “Home Alone” became not only a box office success, but also truly beloved by audiences. But, interestingly, no one bet on him. The script was invented literally drop by drop, the iconic actors were not involved in the film, and director Chris Columbus was still just taking his first steps in Hollywood.
But, amazingly, John Hughes wrote the script in record time, in just 9 days. And the last forty-odd pages took just 8 hours. The muse visited him during a family trip: what if a child was accidentally forgotten at home? And things went well.
And it brought its own impressive financial results: more than 476 million dollars with a budget of only 18 million. Which once again proves that the world of cinema is truly wonderful. Although unpredictable.
