Audiences have enormous influence on the film industry, especially now that they can instantly share their opinions with the world on social media. As a result, the creators of Hollywood blockbusters have to listen to public outrage, even if it means changing the finished product. That's exactly what happened with the films on this list, from Sonic, with its deformed protagonist, to Disney's unexpectedly bloody Aladdin.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

At a Nickelodeon upfront presentation in 2012, Bay revealed that the film would feature the Turtles from an alien planet and that the film would simply be called "Ninja Turtles" rather than "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". This creative decision did not please fans: actor Robbie Rist, who voiced Michelangelo in previous films, generally said that Bay was “sodomizing” the franchise. As a result, Bay admitted that the turtles' origins should still be the same as in the source material, but the film was still a failure.

2. Hellboy (2019)

Ed Skrein was originally going to play werewolf jaguar Ben Daimio in the remake. But once outraged fans informed the actor that his character was supposed to be of Asian descent, Skrein turned down the role. He was eventually replaced by Daniel Dae Kim, but even this was not enough to save the film, and Hellboy flopped at the box office.

3. Suicide Squad (2016)

When audiences harshly panned Batman v Superman, Warner Bros. decided to abandon their initially dark approach to the DC Cinematic Universe in order to win back their fans. The studio scrambled to re-shoot and re-edit scenes from David Ayer's Suicide Squad, which was due out that same year. They decided to give the film a more comedic and upbeat tone in the vein of Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy, so they gave control of the final cut of the film to the company that created the Bohemian Rhapsody scene. The result, as we know, was so-so, as Suicide Squad received even worse reviews than Batman v Superman.

4. Fantasia (1940)

Disney cartoons have more than once found themselves at the center of scandals based on racism - just remember “Dumbo” with its crows. In Fantasia, first a black centaur named Sunflower polishes the hooves of a white centaur, and then another black centaur named Otika rolls out the red carpet for Bacchus. Sunflower and Otika are clear racist caricatures in their own right, and the fact that they were portrayed as servants to white characters only added fuel to the fire. Due to audience criticism of these characters, Disney removed them from the film in the 60s, just as the Black Civil Rights Movement was gaining momentum in the United States.

5. Alien: Covenant (2017)

Ridley Scott originally wanted to ditch the xenomorphs in his Alien prequel series, which began with Prometheus. But after fans criticized the film for barely featuring the iconic alien, Scott decided to focus on the xenomorph in Alien: Covenant. Although it should have attracted audiences, Covenant was outperformed at the box office by Prometheus, earning even less.

6. Fantastic Four (2015)

“Fantastic Four” has chronically unlucky luck with film adaptations. The latest film, directed by Josh Trank, was heavily criticized even before its release. In particular, fans were furious when they learned that Doctor Dom in the film was not named Victor von Doom, but Victor Domashev. The studio had to re-shoot some of the material and make Doom's name the same as in the comics.

7. Justice League (2017)

As with Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. remade Justice League to please audiences. When Zack Snyder left the director's chair following a family tragedy, the studio hired Avengers director Joss Whedon to lead reshoots and ultimately remake the film entirely. Changes included a more light-hearted tone, more comedic moments, a botched CGI waxing of Superman's mustache, and a complete removal of references to the scene from Batman v Superman that begins the Justice League's war with Darkseid. And the most ironic thing is that the outrage of the audience ultimately led to the release of the original version of the film, which was directed by Snyder.

8. Predator (2018)

The film, directed by Iron Man 3 director Shane Black, came under fire after the truth about one of the actors' past came to light. Stephen Wilder Striegel, who had a small role in the film, tried to have a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl in 2010, and Black hired him knowing that he was on the books for sex crimes. Upon learning of this fact, the film's star Olivia Munn approached Fox executives, and the scene in which Striegel's character attacks Munn was understandably removed.

9. Slenderman (2018)

Given the popularity of Slenderman, it makes sense that a Hollywood studio would want to make a film about him. But the timing was wrong: the film appeared four years after two girls tried to kill a friend in order to sacrifice her to Slender Man. After the release of the first trailer, many criticized the filmmakers for profiting from such a controversial figure. As a result, several scenes were removed from the film to avoid backlash, but this only spoiled the story.

10. Interview (2014)

In this film, James Franco and Seth Rogen try to kill Kim Jong-un, so it is not surprising that it significantly strained relations between the United States and North Korea. North Korean hackers responded to the filming with a cyber attack on Sony Pictures and leaking personal information. Although the premiere still took place, the death scene of Kim Jong-un was edited so that it looked less bloody and did not give rise to even more scandals.

11. Bird Box (2018)

Although the Netflix hit is about a group of people at the center of an apocalypse caused by supernatural beings, it depicts a real-life tragedy, which caused backlash from viewers. At the beginning of the film, a news channel shows real footage of the Lac-Mégantic train crash that occurred in 2013. This scene was subsequently edited and footage from the American TV series was shown instead of the train crash.

12. Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

The most memorable moment of the cartoon for many was the funny scene in which Vanellope meets all the Disney princesses at once. However, viewers were outraged by the fact that in the first trailer, Tiana and Pocahontas had much lighter skin compared to the original cartoons. As a result, the animators changed the appearance of these characters to make them more like their 2D counterparts.

13. Aladdin (1992)

Aladdin was one of Disney's most successful films in the '90s, but its popularity also led to a lot of controversy. The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee has filed numerous complaints about the song "Arabian Night." The line “... where they will cut off your ear if someone doesn’t like your face” caused outrage. The offensive line was replaced when the film was released for home viewing.

14. Army of the Dead (2021)

This is the second time Zack Snyder's film had to erase something with CGI, but luckily this incident didn't involve a mustache. The heroes' helicopter pilot was supposed to be played by Chris D'Elia, but after he was accused of sexually harassing underage girls, he was replaced by Tiga Notaro. All this was done thanks to reshoots and high-quality digital editing.

15. Devils (1971)

This religious drama is one of the most controversial films in history, as it contains many explicit, sexual and violent scenes involving religious figures. The most shocking scene involves naked nuns raping a statue of Christ. It is not surprising that this film was eventually subjected to harsh criticism and, as a result, censorship - about three minutes were cut from the original version for American release.

16. Brown Rabbit (2003)

The film was a true case of self-indulgence, as writer/director/lead actor Vincent Gallo included a scene in which actress Chloë Sevigne gives his character a real blow job. The film was understandably panned at the Cannes Film Festival, sparking a bitter feud between Gallo and critic Roger Ebert. However, criticism prompted Gallo to recut the film and cut it from 119 minutes to 93 minutes.

17. All the money in the world (2017)

Ridley Scott faced the difficult task of completely removing Kevin Spacey from the film just a month before its release. After the actor was accused of rape and sexual assault, Scott re-shot all of Spacey's scenes as Jean Paul Getty. The actor was replaced by Christopher Plummer, who was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in just eight days.

18. Sonic in the movies (2020)

This is perhaps one of the most high-profile cases of negative fan reaction in recent years. We all remember how netizens turned against the filmmakers when they first saw the creepy appearance of the main character. As a result, the film had to be delayed for several months so that the creators could remake the famous blue hedgehog, but in the end their work paid off - the film was a success both critically and at the box office.

19. Cats (2019)

The adaptation of "Cats" directed by Tom Hooper failed miserably long before its release: netizens criticized the unsuccessful CGI, which gave rise to creepy humanoid cats, even in the first trailer. And although the filmmakers had several months to complete the effects, the result was still disastrous. So after the film premiered in theaters, the studio released another version of the film with more polished CGI, but the moment had already passed.
