Loyal animals have inspired statues and memorials throughout history. Here are some monuments that still exist today.

Hachiko

After the film of the same name with Richard Gere, only the lazy do not know about the most faithful dog in the world. The story of a dog who waited for its owner at the station for many years after his death inspired not only the Hollywood director, but also the Japanese people.

In Tokyo, Hachiko was immortalized in bronze and placed on one of the streets. If you also decide to watch the film, then don’t forget to stock up on handkerchiefs.

Winnipeg

Back in 1914, Canadian officer Harry Colborne bought a bear cub from a hunter and named her Winnipeg in honor of his hometown, or simply Winnie. The bear lived with him in the British corps, where Harry served as a veterinarian, and became the favorite of all the soldiers.

When Colborne was sent to the front, he handed Winnie over to the London Zoo. The bear lived there for 19 years and enjoyed the attention of visitors. It was she who was once noticed by the writer A. Milne, making him the hero of his book about Winnie the Pooh.

Balto

In 1925, a diphtheria epidemic broke out in the small town of Nome, Alaska, and doctors needed serum for treatment. Due to weather conditions, the medicine could not be delivered by air, and sled dogs came to the rescue. Replacing each other, the sled teams traveled more than 1000 km in a snowstorm. Then this mission was called the “Race of Mercy”, because it was not professional riders who took on the dogs, but those who could stand on their feet.

One of the dogs was Balto, a Siberian husky who led his team led by the Norwegian explorer Gunnar Kaasen. They got the final, most difficult part of the journey, overcoming which both man and dog received an award. It is interesting that the racers themselves were not happy with such fame - more than 150 dogs took part in the mission, but all the popularity went to Balto alone.

Tombili

Once in Istanbul, on one of the streets in the Ziverbey quarter, someone took a photograph of a street cat. Well-fed and imposing, she was sitting reclining on the sidewalk. This photo went viral and quickly spread around the world, and guests of the city were looking for Tombili and wanted to take a photo with her. It’s a pity, but the cat left this world in 2016, after which the Turks collected 17,000 signatures on a petition asking to immortalize Tombili.

Trim

This cat has earned himself several monuments at once: in Sydney, Australia, and London, England. Its owner, British officer Matthew Flinders, was the captain of the ship, and it was he who went to the shores of Australia to find out how huge this continent is. He was the first to put Australia on world maps. But what does the cat have to do with it?

In his diaries, Matthew wrote that he had never seen a smarter and kinder cat: one day the animal fell into the sea, but was able to swim to the ship and climb on board using a rope. After such a thirst for life, the whole team applauded the cat. Trim was always by the captain's side, and no one could imagine Matthew without that purr.

Fala

Franklin Roosevelt's Scottish Terrier Fala was so popular that he had a personal secretary who answered letters from canine admirers. When they made the Roosevelt memorial in Washington, they decided to add a terrier. Needless to say, people take pictures with a dog many times more often than with its owner?

Sergeant Reckless

The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington features statues of several horses, including Sergeant Reckless, a Mongolian mare who carried ammunition for the U.S. Marines in Korea. She received military decorations, including two Purple Hearts.

Andre

In 1961, Harry Goodridge, a diver from Rockport, Maine, USA, found an abandoned seal pup on the shore. He understood that the baby would not survive without the protection of his mother for a couple of days, and therefore he took the seal for himself, giving him the name Andre. Harry loved and cared for the seal, and it grew into a big and friendly friend.

They swam together, and Harry kept waiting for the seal to want to be free, when he would leave him. But Andre liked the company of people so much that he decided to stay with the owner, and after each swim he followed him. This story attracted the media. At first, Harry and Andre were written about in newspapers, then documentaries were made, and then followed by feature family films and several books. Andre died in 1986, after which a seal statue was erected in Rockport Harbor.
