Over the course of hundreds of millions of years, its own unique world was formed under water. There are underwater reservoirs, mountains, gorges, thickets of dangerous corals and dark bottomless depressions.
Like any ecosystem, the world's oceans are inhabited by many inhabitants. There are fish, mammals, and other organisms. And some absolutely creepy creatures that can frighten not only with their appearance, but also with their behavior.
The inhabitants of the World Ocean are more than 2 million species of plants and marine animals. But scientists have studied approximately 200 thousand species, that is, this is about 10% of what there is, if we rely on the opinion of scientists. The best studied animals are those that live in warm waters, for example, the Indian or Pacific Ocean and tropical seas. Their inhabitants look brightly colored and cute, helping to advertise the paradise holiday and the dream of hundreds of divers.
But not all... Meeting some of the inhabitants of the World Ocean will not bring joy to anyone. They live at great depths. Over hundreds of years, these creatures evolved to adapt to little food, high water pressure and almost no sun.
Long-horned sabertooth
This fellow is one of the creepiest inhabitants of the ocean. Its dimensions are small - only 15 cm, but its appearance causes trembling. This is an excellent example of a chthonic monster: its head occupies almost half of its body with long thin teeth.
The ratio of the length of its teeth to the length of its body is the largest of any fish that the researchers studied. This creature lives at a depth of about five kilometers, where sunlight does not reach, and in general, few people are ready to coexist with it. Therefore, the saber tooth simply rushes at any object that even slightly resembles food.
Giant squid
Yes, these are not the kind of squids that you can find in grocery stores as a snack for beer. This one himself is not averse to snacking on someone.
Many considered the giant squid to be an invention of writers and directors. But it actually exists and it even has several types. It is rarely possible to catch it, because it lives far from the coast. The length of this creature can reach up to 18 meters and it is very strong: sperm whales are often found with characteristic wounds from squid tentacles. These squids live even in cold waters. The giant Antarctic squid caught near New Zealand weighed 450 kg and was 17.4 m long.
Anglerfish
This is just a nightmare creature that can scare anyone. Monkfish lives at a depth of 1500-3000 meters. The body is flattened on the sides, covered with dark brown skin with bumps and growths. It has a mouth with two rows of long and thin teeth. And all this beauty is female. Males are usually not as expressive and charismatic. And much smaller than females - girls can weigh up to 20 kg and two meters in length, and boys are only a measly 5 cm. They also reproduce in a very interesting way: the male attaches himself to the side or back of the female, growing vessels into her and thus fertilizes her. A female can carry up to five of these strong and self-sufficient anglerfish. Periodically, the males fall off in parts from the wife and only the reproductive system remains.
They also hunt in an original way. On their back they have a special fin, divided into several rods and each of them is crowned with a sac of bacteria that can glow. The fish think they are plankton and fly straight into the light. Some anglers went further down the ladder of meanness and grew such a probe in their mouth. It just opens its mouth and waits for a fish to be attracted there. Well, of course, to carry men on yourself, and even hunt... Children too... At least the food should come on its own.
Meshkorot
It is also called pelican largemouth. It has a tiny skull, but a huge mouth with a prey pouch, like a pelican.
The bagmouth also has no scales or fins, no ribs, no gill rays, and is dark brown in color.
It is considered one of the oldest inhabitants of the ocean, which during evolution changed its appearance and was able to adapt to life at a depth of 2 to 5 km. There is not much food there, so the sackmouth can go without eating for months. But if you are lucky and some poor fellow wanders into his domain, then the sack swallows him whole.
Striped catfish
At first glance, the catfish is quite harmless and ridiculously clumsy. It lives on a relatively shallow bottom - from 25 to 500 meters. But in ancient times, sailors had a belief that catfish sensed a shipwreck and began to follow the ship until it sank.
Its appearance is not one that one would like to recall later in memory: length up to one and a half meters, weight up to 25 kg, its color is dark brown or pale blue, bulging eyes and a blunt-snouted head. Well, a powerful mouth with a row of sharp and strong teeth. They can easily bite through the shells of crustaceans and seriously injure a person. Add to this aggression and swiftness and you get a real sea wolf.
Mitsekurina
That's who is ugly and chthon.
This is one of the species of sharks, which is also called the goblin shark or goblin shark due to the fact that it has a huge growth on its skull and also because of its creepy moving jaws with thin teeth like blades.
They can reach four meters in length and weigh about 200 kg. A meeting with him will be deadly.
This is one of the least studied shark species; only 40 of them have been caught in history. It is known that they are found in the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic, and are also classified as deep-sea, because they live at a distance of 1-1.5 km from the surface.
Alepisaurus
It has been known to science for a long time: in 1741, during the exploration of Kamchatka, its carcass washed ashore. Its length is about 2 meters, and its weight is up to 8 kg.
Alepisaurus has a huge ribbed fin and a wide, powerful mouth with thin teeth. It is fast, aggressive and capable of hunting not only horizontally, but also vertically, so its victims have no chance.
Blob fish
She, thanks to her sad appearance, became a real heroine of memes. She is one of the most famous deep-sea inhabitants. The drop does not have any clearly defined outlines, it is just jelly with eyes.
Her lifestyle is as bleak as her appearance: she doesn’t hunt anyone, but simply floats with the flow, eating small crustaceans along the way. And its fate is also not happy: it is not eaten as food, but due to its sudden popularity, the drop began to be mined and sold as a souvenir, which led to the fact that it became on the verge of extinction.
