20 comedians who eventually became excellent dramatic actors (21 photos)
Usually actors have their own role. Either you star in comedy films, or you are a dramatic actor and they call you to play a role in a “serious movie”. However, this would be too much of a simplification, because we know many comedians who amaze with their dramatic performances. We just need to give them this opportunity!
1. John Goodman
His role as a psychopathic killer in the psychological thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane was pure perfection. But we are accustomed to consider him a good-natured man!
2. Bryan Cranston
Cranston did a great job in Breaking Bad. Although before this the dude was only seen in comedy shows.
3. Gene Wilder
He gained fame thanks to his roles in the comedies of Mel Brooks, with whom he was close friends. In 1971 he played in the musical film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Later there were roles in a duet with black comedian Richard Pryor in several films. His image is that of a complex, sensitive man. Not handsome, but somehow very attractive, in the spirit of the 70s. Such intelligent sophistication.
4. Bob Odenkirk
This actor - the main character of the series "Better Call Saul" - does both tasks perfectly in one role. Both the dramatic and comedic components are excellent.
5. Kurt Russell
Kurt Russell was a comedy actor at Disney for about 10 years until he starred in a TV movie about a mass murderer and became friends with director John Carpenter. It turned out that he is just as good at serious roles!
6. Olivia Colman
An actress who is wonderful both in the action comedy "Hot Fuzz" and in the historical drama "The Favorite."
7. Hugh Laurie
He went from the comedy “The Fry and Laurie Show” and “Jeeves and Wooster” to the TV series “House” and then “The Night Manager”. This man knows what acting is.
8. John Lithgow
He starred in a huge number of comedy films and TV series, playing positive characters. And in 2010 he received a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his role as a serial killer in season 4 of Dexter.
9. Bill Hader
Comedian and parodist who rose to prominence on the variety show Saturday Night Live and later co-created the series Barry, in which he stars. This is a black comedy, which means there is more than enough drama there.
10. Woody Harrelson
In the 80s he played in the sitcom "Merry Company", but since then he has starred in a lot of films of various genres. The actor has several Oscar nominations, and he deserves it.
11. Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks, if you remember the early 1980s, was a talented comedic actor... Then no one could have imagined that he would star in dramas. Not to mention playing the main role in them.
12. Robin Williams
He was a phenomenal actor, in any genre. He knew how to make people laugh and move them to tears.
13. Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a long way since 3rd Planet from the Sun.
14. Steve Carell
He played excellently in the comedy-drama "Little Miss Sunshine."
15. Steve Buscemi
His performance in Boardwalk Empire was excellent. It's a shame he doesn't get more dramatic roles.
16. Jason Bateman
Knows how to make an insult sound like a compliment. An excellent actor in any role.
17. Katey Sagal.
She is absolutely organic both in a comedic role and in a dramatic one - for example, in the series “Sons of Anarchy”.
18. Jeff Daniels
“Dumb and Dumber” and the TV series “Newsies”: the same actor, but the result is completely different.
19. Jim Carrey
Initially, he was perceived as a purely comedic actor (remember all those jumps and antics!), but then the films “The Truman Show” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” appeared.
20. Steve Martin
Steve Martin goes beyond acting. He's a great comedian, comedian and dramatic actor, yes. But he is also a wonderful musician, artist and writer.
