What is it like to be born at the top of the food chain, to be born a bear? You are larger than others from birth, all roads are open to you, and your rear is protected by a parent with whom no predator would want to mess. But why are you playing with your brother in complete silence?
Only next to their mother can cubs run wild to their heart's content.
The forest is not a cute provincial town, but a zone of permanently increased danger. Even bear cubs monitor their environment and are afraid of large, unfamiliar animals. It's not wolverines and wolves that kids are afraid of - they can attack only when they are on the verge of starvation. Young bears are afraid of adult bears. And for a reason.
Even teenagers behave quite modestly; they cannot cope with an adult bear.
The fact is that male bears kill cubs. Not out of hatred or fear of competition, these are too complex feelings for them. They just know that a mother who has lost her children will grieve for a month and will want to have children again. And the child killer is very close and ready to become a father.
It seems that there is a very simple way out of this situation: always keep the child with you and then most males will not risk attacking you. But overprotection doesn’t lead to any good, even among the bearish people. Games are the basis of socialization not only in humans, but also in all more or less intelligent mammals. There will be no hectic fights with peers - and it will be much more difficult for your child to live this damn life.
A particularly unpleasant situation is developing in the Far East. Local bears depend on spawning and often fish in entire groups, females mixed with males. During the fish hunt, the babies are left to their own devices and any passing male is capable of taking their life. The little ones can only do one thing - play with each other in complete silence and hope that the powers that be will not pay attention to them.
