Every automaker, from time to time, gives free rein to its designers to create concept models. By and large, they serve to attract attention to the brand. Few of the concepts make it to mass production, most of them are simply forgotten. Here are some of them.

Chevrolet Astro III

Designed to look like a jet, the Astro III concept looks more like a road-going fighter, and the theme doesn't end with just its appearance.

Debuting in 1969, the Astro III was intended to be the high-performance car of the future. To achieve this goal, Astro III was equipped with a full jet engine. The fighter theme also touched upon the interior and the power-operated lift-up cabin. Although little remembered, Astro III was perhaps the coolest concept of the late 60s.

Plymouth Slingshot

The Slingshot, perhaps the most unique-looking concept car of the '80s, debuted in 1988 and was intended to attract a younger audience to Plymouth's production cars with its futuristic and downright crazy styling.

Plymouth collaborated with university students to design the Slingshot, resulting in its unique design. The only common thing here is a rear-mounted turbocharged engine. But the design still looks unique and futuristic today.

Oldsmobile Incas

Designed by Italdesign, Incas was first shown in 1986 and aims to inspire the brand for the future. Information about the car is limited, but it is known that it used GM's Quad 4 engine, which debuted in their production cars shortly after this concept.

What really attracts attention is its interior. Concept cars tend to have a sense of latitude with their interior design, but the Incas was on another level. It had a style reminiscent of a sci-fi spaceship. The steering wheel alone makes the Incas look absolutely stunning, but touches like the dashboard and gullwing doors make it completely unique.

Ghia Action

Taking the wedge style that was popular in the '70s to its logical extreme, the Action was introduced in 1978 with its unusual looks.

While the wedge shape gets a lot of attention, the engine was undoubtedly more of an attraction as the Ghia Action was powered by a rear-mounted Ford Formula 1 engine. Many additional details, such as closed rear wheels and a flat rear end, combine to make the Action one of the most unique and memorable cars ever created.

Rinspeed X-Trem

The company is mostly known for making crazy, low-volume cars. Rinspeed reached the peak of its madness with the X-Trem concept. Debuting in 1999, the X-Trem was designed to be a pickup truck with truly unique styling and features.

One feature is that the X-Trem carries a small hovercraft in the back for fun on the beach, and can also carry a platform with a motorcycle and a jet ski. What's even crazier is that the black parts on the body are a built-in crane designed to lift this vessel or platform. Adding even more fun is the Mercedes V8 engine with 347 hp, making it plenty fast for such a wild design.

Peugeot Hoggar

Designed as a desert buggy, the Hoggar remained a concept, although it's hard to call it a buggy. The unusual design itself combines the Peugeot styling of the era with the stripped-down design of an off-road buggy.

Introduced in 2003, the Hoggar has serious off-road capability thanks to its advanced suspension. What's even more interesting is that the Hoggar is powered by two separate diesel engines, giving it an impressive 360bhp of power. and excellent fuel efficiency. But looks aside, the Hoggar looks like a great way to spend a weekend off-roading.

Peugeot Proxima

While the Hoggar was quite unusual, Peugeot's craziest concept came in the 80s. This concept, called Proxima, was introduced in 1986 and featured a number of advanced technologies of the time.

But the most striking aspect of Proxima is the interior. The '80s were a crazy time for concept cars, but the Proxima is a top pick for the craziest interior of perhaps all time. Just look at it, the style is straight out of a sci-fi movie and the look continues the theme with some unusual choices.

Renault EZ-Ultimo

The more recent Renault EZ-Ultimo concept debuted in 2018, with a focus on the future of the cars themselves. Now such a car is perceived ambiguously, but the EZ-Ultimo shows what kind of vehicles may be in the future.

The EZ-Ultimo is a luxury autonomous vehicle with a stunning interior and futuristic exterior, combining unparalleled luxury with the convenience of autonomous driving. Currently it uses an electric motor.

Subaru B9 Scrambler

The B9 Scrambler was Subaru's attempt at a hybrid sports car, more than a decade before such cars became popular.

B9 Scrambler, developing 270 hp. with a hybrid powertrain, debuted in 2003 and featured many advanced features such as self-leveling air suspension. But the design also stands out as unique, combining traditional roadster styling with Subaru's intended vision of the future.

BMW GINA

At first glance, the GINA looks like a pretty normal concept car, but what makes the GINA unique is what it's made of. Unveiled in 2008, the concept stood out for one very good reason.

The reason lies in the body itself, made entirely of fabric, which is stretched over an aluminum frame. Some elements of the aluminum frame can be modified using small hydraulic installations. Thus, the shape of the car may change, although only slightly.
