Spain's Costa Brava is famous for its beaches and picturesque coastline, but there is another gem here - the town of La Garrotxa. There is a volcanic zone with 40 volcanic cones, and more than 20 frozen lava flows can be seen here.

The region of La Garrotxa is part of the Spanish province of Girona. There are 40 volcanic cones and more than 20 frozen lava flows here. An interesting feature of the region is that inside the crater of one of the volcanoes, Santa Margarida, there is a small church dating back to the 12th century. They say it was destroyed by an earthquake in Catalonia in 1428, and was restored only in the 19th century.

11,000 years have passed since the eruption of the now extinct Santa Margarida volcano. It is located at an altitude of 766 meters above sea level, and is open to tourists. You can take a special bus to various hiking trails near the volcano, go straight into the crater, and wander around it, exploring the volcanic rocks and lava that accumulated after the eruptions.

Another picturesque place is the beech forest of Fageda d'en Jorda, where trees grow from the "volcanic" soil. Also in the natural park there is the Croscat volcano - the largest on the Iberian Peninsula, whose height is 786 meters. It was once used as a quarry - so it looks like part of the volcano has been cut away.

Many tourists stay in La Garrotxa for several days to explore all the beauty. They spend the night mostly in the nearby town of Olot, and the next day travel to the equally exciting and picturesque town of Castellfollit de la Roca. The city is built on a huge basalt rock over 50 m high, which was formed as a result of the layering of two lava flows. Volcanic rocks were even used in the construction of the city - basalt can be seen here on footpaths and in the decorative elements of buildings.

The final stop on the journey through the volcanic region is Santa Pau, a medieval village with narrow cobbled streets, monasteries and a Gothic church. Every January there is a huge food festival dedicated to fesol, a type of bean grown in volcanic soil.
