Countries of the world in which women are drafted into the army on an equal basis with men (9 photos)
In this case, we are not talking about contract service, but about conscript service. Everyone is talking about Israel, where women undergo compulsory military service. But which countries also attract representatives of the “weaker” sex to serve in the armed forces?
Israel
The selection opens with the Israeli Defense Forces. Women in Israel are subject to military service. At the same time, conscripts for religious reasons (both men and women), married women, and also for health reasons (does not depend on gender) are exempt from army service. In total, about 30-40% of all women in Israel serve in the army.
Women began serving in the army in 1948, when the young country found itself in a dangerous situation.
Norway
Norway introduced women's military conscription in 2015, becoming the first European country since World War II to impose compulsory national service for both men and women. In practice, only those young people who have high motivation and desire to serve in the Norwegian army are selected for the army. In total, 80% of men and 20% of women serve in the Norwegian armed forces (as of 2020).
Sweden
The Swedish army has an unusual experience. In 2010, universal conscription was completely abolished. The armed forces began to switch to a completely contract basis, but for money the command could not recruit the required number of military personnel. In 2017, the conscription system was returned, but this time Swedish citizens of all genders were subject to conscription.
Taiwan
All able-bodied Taiwanese citizens between the ages of 19 and 35 are subject to conscription into the country's armed forces. Serve in the Taiwanese Army for 1 year.
Bolivia
In the Western Hemisphere, only in Bolivia do women serve equally with men. Conscription into the armed forces begins at age 16.
Mozambique
All men and women over the age of 18 are required to register for military service. The service life is 2 years. It is noteworthy that in practice very few women serve in the country's armed forces.
Chad
In this African country, women are given a choice: either they undergo compulsory military service or alternative civilian service. Men serve in the army for 3 years, while women are required to serve for 1 year.
Eritrea
Men and women from the age of 18 are subject to compulsory conscription into the armed forces. The service life is 18 months.
DPRK
The DPRK army differs from other armed forces of the world in that men are required to serve in the army for 10 years, and women for 3 years. Young people begin military service at the age of 17. If a woman turns 23, she can no longer be called up for service. The DPRK army also differs from other armies in that the army's balance sheet consists of large agricultural complexes, factories and construction teams that also carry out civilian projects. In fact, the army is a kind of state within a state.
There is the least information about the armed forces of African countries. And a trend of equality is emerging in the world. Women begin to serve on an equal basis with men. How do you feel about women who serve in the army by conscription?
