Sometimes plans just don't work out, no matter how good they look on paper or in your head. The online community r/ThereWasAnAttempt (“We tried, but it didn’t work”) shares examples of just such failures, often quite funny.





1. Trying to give away the worst piece of land



In 1913, Sarah Rector, a 10-year-old black girl, received a 160-acre land grant in Oklahoma. The best agricultural land was reserved for whites, so she was given a barren plot. Oil was soon discovered there, and she became the first black millionaire in the United States.

2. An attempt to deceive enemy troops





During World War II, the Germans built a fake wooden airfield with wooden planes, vehicles and hangars to deceive the enemy. The Royal Air Force, aware of the secret project for months, waited patiently for construction to complete and then dropped a single fake wooden bomb there.

The American company A&W once introduced a "Third Pounder Burger" to its menu, which was sold at the same price as McDonald's Quarter Pounder Burger. Buyers expressed sharp dissatisfaction - they decided that they were being deceived, because three is less than four. The sellers, realizing that they couldn't explain elementary school math to adults without coming across as condescending assholes, simply quietly removed the burger from the menu.
