Every flock has its black sheep. Even among the crocodiles, one of these managed to get in there. Although the “lousiness” of our hero, the gharial, turns into a real advantage for humans. He is the safest crocodile in the world!

Dudes, who gave the crocodile a pipette instead of a nose?

Our hero caught Zen in the most suitable place for this - India, Nepal and Pakistan. At first glance, it is difficult to believe that the gharial does not pose any danger. The giant carcass stretches up to 5 meters and weighs up to 180 kilos! Sounds solid to us, but very frail for reptilians - a Nile crocodile of the same length would weigh 3 times more.

It doesn't look very safe from this angle...

Well, the head is generally something with something. Remember how fun it was to disfigure faces in The Sims game editor? So, nature, apparently, doesn’t understand jokes. She actually multiplied the reptile's mouth by zero. The gharial's jaw is 5 times narrower than its skull! You can't bite people with such a mouth - it will break.

My mother told me, don't stick your nose into other people's business...

At the same time, the gharial almost does not know how to walk. For comparison: alligators can even gallop. And this guy’s maximum is to slightly raise the carcass above the ground. On land, our narrow-faced friend moves exclusively by crawling. And despite all of the above, this does not mean at all that gharials are worse than other crocodiles. They just don’t try to get the title of apex predator, but live for their own pleasure.

Hair combs rest on the shore. The wildlife is amazing!

Yes, with a flattened mouth you cannot hunt large animals, but for fish it is a deadly weapon. The shape of the gharial's teeth is ideal for catching slippery and nimble prey. They do their job so well that fishermen often kill gharials due to competition!

Why do they eat fish and I'm scared?

Yes, on land our hero moves with the agility of a sausage, but in the water he feels like a fish. Unlike most crocodiles, the gharial is capable of staying in water for several days. The reptile comes to the shore only for two things: to bask and continue its race.

LA-KA-LUTE.

Gharials live for themselves for 10 years, and only after their anniversary do they think about children. It would seem that the level of unusual appearance of the gharial has reached its maximum. But during the mating season, the animal breaks through the bottom - the males grow a giant bulge on their nose. Guys attract ladies with their bump. They give the young ladies a real jacuzzi: they sink to the bottom and blow bubbles until they gather a harem of 3-4 females around them. Well, I wouldn't mind a free jacuzzi either...

We told you not to pick at the sore!

The happy ladies begin the heroic journey of a single mother lasting 2.5 months. The female buries her clutch in a hole not far from the shore. As soon as the baby hatches, the mother will act as their personal security, escorting them to the water. For the first months of life, the babies will be under the protection of the female. Even so, only 1 in 40 survives to adulthood.

That's exactly whose offspring sits on the parents' necks.

Once upon a time, this was enough for animals to populate every river of the Hindustan Peninsula. But gharials are close to moving from the Red Book to the Black Book. In addition to the fact that clean waters in modern India have become an oxymoron, reptiles are hunted by fishermen and advocates of traditional medicine. The first blame crocodiles for the decrease in catch. The latter are hunting for the very same blyamba that male gharials use to arrange a Jacuzzi for their females. It is used as an aphrodisiac. Well, apparently, being a dangerous crocodile is much more profitable.
