Dilapidated housing: which are the oldest houses people still live in (12 photos)
Do you feel like your home is too old? Then these ancient buildings, in which people still live, may make you reconsider your views on dilapidated housing a little.
Stone house
This house is located in France. The first mentions of it appeared in the 13th century.
Its composition is also interesting. It is wider at the top than at the bottom. And this is not just like that. In this way, the owner could bypass taxes on the area of the house at the base. Many homeowners did this, but it was this builder’s trick that came to us.
The oldest wooden house
On the island of Streymoy, which is part of the Faroe Islands, there is a house called "Royal Farm". This is the oldest wooden house on the planet in which people still live.
The building was erected in the 11th century, and at first it belonged to the Church, and then came under the jurisdiction of the Danish Kingdom. The current owners have owned the house only since the 16th century - they are representatives of the ancient Patturson family.
In fact, the Pattursons, although they have lived in the house for 17 generations, have never become the official owners: they rent the house from the royal family.
Cave villages
It is no secret that many residents of mountainous regions did not particularly bother with building new buildings. Why do this when you can arrange caves?
This is what the residents of the Iranian village of Kandovan did. Now it is over 800 years old. The grottoes in which people live appeared due to the eruption of an ancient volcano. More than 150 families live there.
Many of the local residents, as in the old days, are engaged in agriculture, and go to the city for the winter.
But recently, due to the fact that the village became known throughout the world, some residents in Kandovan have switched to other ways of earning money: some of them are opening hotels and restaurants.
Also in Iran there is the village of Maymand, which, according to some historians, is more than 12 thousand years old. There are now about 350 houses there.
Oldest house
Speaking about houses around the world, we cannot fail to mention the oldest house in our country. They are considered to be a small house in Vyborg in the Leningrad region. The house is located on a hill, so it is slightly sloped from below.
It is believed that the house was built back in the 16th century as a private fortification. And if we take into account that reconstructions were carried out rarely and did not particularly affect the stones in the walls, we can say that this house remained the same as it was during the period of Swedish rule.
It is unlikely that you will be able to enter it without permission: there are residential apartments there. But tourists often come to take a look from the outside, of which there are a lot in Vyborg.
Another contender for the title of oldest residential building
No one lives in this house now, but still in the Vladimir region there are the chambers of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. According to legend, it was built in 1158.
