Full-length and short films shot by various directors on the phone.

With the development of technology, more and more filmmakers have become interested in the question, what will happen if you try to shoot a film on a mobile phone?

Initially, phone cameras could not provide a clear picture or good sound, so it was necessary to buy additional equipment: a microphone, lenses, a tripod, or even hack the mobile software in order to flexibly configure the camera.

Not all directors consider phones as a tool for work, but there will definitely be a few dozen people.

More than 80% of people on Earth have a gadget that encourages free creativity. Naturally, short films also pop up among ordinary users, which are sometimes no worse, or even better, than the works of filmmakers, but the lack of a serious budget affects them.

For example, the 2011 film Olive was shot entirely on a Nokia N8 camera, to which camera lenses were stuck using shit and sticks.

As the director of the film, Homan Khalili, known for one of his roles in the film “Monstro,” said, the filming process was a real hell.

Firmware flaws prevented the lens from focusing normally on the right things, and the man had to hack the phone to disable automatic focusing.

In 2013, director Konrad Mess tried to shoot a short film on a phone.

The short film The Other Side was dramatic and visually interesting. The picture itself was black and white, but with occasional splashes of red.

The plot is dedicated to vampires and filmed in the horror style of the mid-20th century.

By 2017 - 2018, more famous filmmakers began to catch up, for example, Steven Soderbergh, who worked on Ocean's 11, or Zack Snyder, whose name is well-known thanks to his work.

Soderbergh filmed the psychological thriller “Unsane” on his phone, which helped set the right atmosphere and evoke the effect of presence in the viewer.

Also, getting rid of bulky equipment made it possible to take more interesting shots when shooting.

Snyder made a short film of 4 minutes, but what a short film! Snow Steam Iron is about a girl who gets into a fight with the police in snowy New York.

Gray filters, drama, tense atmosphere and suspenseful soundtrack – it’s all there, and the production itself is in no way inferior to the director’s great works.

However, Snyder himself claims that the film was shot in one weekend.

Also in 2018, director Boris Guts decided to get involved in telephone filming, filming the comedy Fagot, which tells the story of a guy who decided to break up with his girlfriend. The picture was shot from the first person.

Gradually, this type of shooting is increasingly popping up in cinema, for example, some episodes include shooting landscapes. Various experiments are still ongoing, but mass use of phones is still far away. However, it will be interesting to see how this area develops in the future.
