Art requires sacrifice. Sometimes it's broken teeth or piercings in unexpected places. Sometimes the need to learn something new and gain specific skills. And sometimes you just have to eat a live octopus. 
1. Jennifer Lawrence - "Winter's Bone" (2010) 
The actress learned how to skin and gut a squirrel so that her performance would look believable on screen.
2. Brad Pitt - "Fight Club" (1999) 
Brad voluntarily went to the dentist and had pieces of his front teeth removed so that his character, who actively participates in ultimate fighting, would look vital. After filming ended, the actor regained his charming smile.
3. Charlize Theron - "Monster" (2003) 
To authentically portray the appearance of the heroine (real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos), Charlize shaved her eyebrows, put on prosthetics, made her hair look sparse and unkempt, and constantly singed the ends of her hair.
4. Jamie Dornan - "The Fall" (2013) 
The actor said that, while trying to get used to the role of a serial killer, he once followed a woman who got off a train. He said he kept his distance and followed her for quite some time. “It was a little exciting, kind of dirty,” he admitted.
5. Rooney Mara - "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2011) 
To match the book description of her character, the actress had her nipples pierced, and also had her ears pierced in four places, an eyebrow, a lip and a nose. Tattoos were drawn on her, of course.
6. Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad (2008-2013) 
Bryan Cranston and his co-star Aaron Paul were very convincing as chemists illegally making meth. The actor said that the series' consultants were real chemists, DEA specialists, and the actors were given very detailed instructions.
7. Chloë Sevigny - "The Brown Bunny" (2003) 
Chloe shocked audiences when she performed oral sex on her co-star Vincent Gallo, who was also the film's director and her boyfriend at the time. While there is no problem with consensual sex acts being performed on screen, viewers of this 2003 experimental drama were not quite prepared for such a development.
8. Jamie Foxx - "Ray" (2004) 
This is one of the best biopics in the history of cinema, as the actor seems to have reincarnated as the iconic musician Ray Charles. To make the resemblance even more complete, Jamie Foxx lost 14 kg and wore prosthetic eyelids, which had to be sealed (covering his eyes) for 14 hours a day. He later admitted that this caused him to have panic attacks.
9. Nicole Kidman - "The Paperboy" (2012) 
Have you ever heard that if a person is stung by a jellyfish, you need to urinate on that spot? In the 2012 American crime drama, Zac Efron's character was stung by a jellyfish. And instead of playing a stunt, Nicole went the authentic route - she actually urinated on Zach's face.
10. Halle Berry - "Splash Fever" (1991) 
According to the plot, Berry's heroine lives on the street and, to put it mildly, stinks. To get used to the role, the actress decided to abstain from showering for about 8 weeks. She later admitted that she did wash “some parts of her body,” but entirely in the shower—never during the entire time the film was being filmed.
11. Choi Min Sik - "Oldboy" (2003) 
In one of the scenes, the main character of the film eats a live octopus. In fact, due to having to do multiple takes, the actor ate four octopuses. This despite the fact that he is a Buddhist and a vegetarian - but art requires sacrifice! Choi Min Sik apologized to each octopus and prayed for each of them before putting them in his mouth.
12. Rosamund Pike - "Gone Girl" (2004) 
In one of the most memorable scenes, Rosamund's character seduces her ex and then slashes his throat with a paper cutter. And to prepare, the actress practiced using a knife to cut up a pig carcass at a local butcher shop, just to "get an idea of what it would be like."
13. Michelle Williams - "7 Days and Nights with Marilyn" (2011) 
To imitate Marilyn Monroe's signature walk, Michelle practiced walking with a belt tied around her knees.
14. John David Washington - "Tenet" (2020) 
John David plays a CIA agent involved in the extraction operation. For this role, he not only learned to speak backwards, but also to blink, walk, fight, block punches, and run backwards.
15. Ruth Wilson - "Dark River" (2017) 
The film takes place on a farm. The actress made the obvious decision to work on a real farm in Yorkshire in order to delve deeper into the character of the heroine and gain special skills, such as shearing sheep and castrating lambs.
